I have to do a presentation for one of my engineering classes, and I wanted to do it on some recent technology advances in fishing equipment. I was wondering if anyone knows of any articles, magazines, websites, etc. that I could use for sources to get some of the technical info on some of the equipment.

Id say look at some side imaging sonar units.
Good luck.

I think rjhyland has a good point. I think that Humminbird's 360 transducer would be cool to check out too

you would also have a choice of maybe checking through Ambassadeur reels, they do have schematics available on line, and don't have the problems with proprietary info that depth finders probably have, making it much easier to look at engineering changes in reels, in particular you could look at the switchover to low profile from the long term popularity of the round, above the rod technology used for 60 years or so by the company.

also was just discussing with a friend, the fairly recent adaption of electric drilling packs to ice augers, and the conversion kits etc., now allowing one to drill ice holes with their electric drill. 17 holes from the minimum battery pack i have been told.

also the adaptation of 4 stroke engines to small outboards is fairly recent adaptation considering how long two strokes were used.

For me the biggest change and improvement in the last 25 years has been the line used..... fluorocarbon...and spun poly.... lots of specs.... water retention.... UV blockage...etc...

Why would you have to worry about line, I mean, 300 casts? You could use anything and get by...

Go to japan tackle.com and then lookup the Tackle topic sec and find the blog on Advanced brake systems for reels and do a presentation on the advancement of the braking system on reels . It shows the SVS, 4X4, MAG, Magtrax, Ultra Mag, Mag Force V, Mag Force Z,. IVCB, Flying Arm braking systems and whats coming in the furture reels.

You mean this one? http://www.japantackle.com/Topics/brake_system.htm

Funny you mention that; that's exactly what my focus ended up being on for the presentation. I actually blew my instructor away yesterday with how scientific and sophisticated the inside of a casting reel actually is when I did my practice presentation yesterday.

And thanks to everyone for the ideas.

You might want to look into the reels with Digital control too, like the Calcutta DC and Trinidad DC.
