Use to a transom mount most of my life but in the market for a new bow mount. I'm torn between the hand control Maxxum or stepping up to a Terrova with I pilot. For muskie, mostly casting and will also be doing alot of spider rigging for crappie. Whats the thoughts?

I fished out of a buddies boat last night that has a terrova with I-pilot. I was skeptical that it could be as good as everybody claims but was very impressed. I currently run a PD v2 70 with co-pilot but would definetly upgrade to that when the time comes.

I'm going into my 3rd season with an I-Pilot. IMO, the remote is more of a crutch than a benefit when casting. This isn't a knock on the product, the product is awesome, it just doesn't translate well to casting. You need two hands to cast and figure 8, thus using a remote is clunky. Where the motor really shines in the casting world is the advanced auto piliot. Depending on the wind, it will hold a course very easily, making boat control much less of a hassle allowing you to focus more on your fishing. The spot lock on the remote can be a very handy feature when the situation warrants. All in all though, the remote just isn't something you are going to want to use much when casting. I had to ween myself off of it because it was costing me so many casts.

The remote aside, the Terrova is an awesome motor, I cast with it every day on the water and absolutely love it. You get on a huge flat, point the thing in the direction you want your drift to take and start chucking. If the wind is light that is all there is to it.

The I-Piolt remote is an absolutely amazing tool for walleye fishing where position and speed on th structure you are fishing are critical elements. I suspect that would translate very well to your Spider Rigging.

like the above post said, i have a PD v2 with i-pilot and i un-installed it because it is a major pain when casting. Not sure about the terrova but the PD v2 will not interchange foot pedal with hand remote, u have to choose one or the other so i choose foot pedal. It is just not practical to cast and try and control your bow mount with your hands. I would get the terrova for sure!

The Terrova will allow you to use the I-Pilot and Foot pedal interchangeably. As I said, my review is not a knock on the I-Pilot product, the product is outstanding. It is just that the remote is not something that works well when casting due to the nature of casting.

IMO the Terrova is the best of both worlds.

Agree with Brad. Terrova is the best trolling motor, but I don't use the remote that much. I just use the remote for the the spot lock, to go on my recorded tracks or if im sitting down and taking a break and having someone else fish up front. Other than that, I'm on the foot pedal. Still the best motor though.

I had a maxxum 3X bowmount for 5 seasons and a plain maxxum bowmount for the previous however many seasons. Switched to a Terrova 80lb with I-pilot last year. I will not be going back to hand control. I couldn't see getting a powerdrive and being tied to just the remote. I use the foot pedal the most while musky fishing but spot lock is worth the I-pilot money alone. Plus it's nice having a motor that doesn't turn on its own all the time like the hand controls and cable drives.
