There was a post a while back about this reel. Who is fishing one now? I bit the big bullet and ordered one from Japan... Gorgeous reel... However, I am not accustomed to casting a reel with no magnetic/cast control... What a mess... Also, the handle engages very easily, abruptly stopping the line...
I know I will need to practice, but, any pointers on setup, how to set spool friction, casting, and thumbing properly with this reel would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

| Just a suggestion but maybe remove 25 yards of line or so. I can see the reel is filled to the max which is usually desirable but will always backlash easier. |

Seriously, though, the handle engages the spool? On most reels like that you need to manually flip the lever back to engage the spool. Good advice on filling it 3/4 full, I'd tighten the spool brake up as much as you can and slowly back off as you get the hang of it. That is a spool brake next to the star drag, isn't it?
Looks sweet. The fish will take notice. |

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | I'm curious, this looks like a manual clutch where you flip it to engage it on both the cast and retrieve. Maybe it isn't but it looks like it. If it's a manual engagement, how does the handle engage when you cast it unless you accidently engage the clutch? Just curious. |

Location: Ontario | I did consider buying it as well but decided to wait for the 2001nr pg version
Di you try to burn 10" blades with it? Was it easy to reel them in ? (Could you see your self doing it for hours ?)
Thanks |

| If you click the link the spec sheet says it has a 7...something on the drag. Assuming that's kilos, not pounds. That's ~15 pounds, which isn't bad. |

Location: SW Ohio | Hey Chasin 50,
I know this thread is a little dated, but it just came up on a Google search I did on the Shimano OJ... I am also a lefty and looking for a reel similar to the Shimano Trinidad for burning bucktails. I was wondering how the reel worked out for you. Was the auto engagement an issue or just something you get around after a little more practice with the reel. Any feedback you can give would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
GW |

Location: Michigan | i have not perfected casting with this reel. i have resided to use it for jigging only... i'd like my money back on this one... incredible real, and looks like it would be the perfect solution for us left hand guys, but hasn't proven to be the case for me. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | You still having problems Chad? I remember when I went to the Trinidads I had a slight learning curve, but nothing that stopped me from using them...and I'd consider myself a rookie on conventional gear compared to you. What are your main issues? Line stack up? The lever still engaging on the cast? (That one I can't explain...that lever should stay down until you engage it.) Backlashes? I went to making heavier bucktails for casting on my Trinis and it helped a good bit, both on the cast and on the retrieve. Give me a call or email sometime. |

| I have Ocea 1501PG right now in my hands.
Bought it for jigging though.
Still I think there is a solution for handle engament.
The handle locks with free spool verically, so it's rotation from locked position goes inline with direction of casting.
Unscrew the handle and place it in a different position (there is only two positions possible).
This way it will lock facing down and thus in a position opposite to casting,
making it simply impossible to engage.
Cheers, DK |

| how is it any different then the guys who spend $500 on a tranx? I would assume he bought that reel to have a similarly capable reel to the trini or tranx...only downfall is they don't make those reels in a tranx 501 or a trini 12L... |

Gormonbozia said he bought it for jigging, that is why I asked.
I think the guy is from Europe and may be fishing something other than muskies. |

| The reel's name is Ocea Jigger and as the name stipulated it is designed in first instance for saltwater vertical butterfly jigging. I meant exactly that type of jigging.
For northern pike I've got Calcutta D, also a very nice reel, especially with Black Friday pricing.
