So what is the difference between the spool tensioner and the braking system? I understand the tensioner is for the weight of the bait and the braking system controls the spool speed. But how do they work together for an optimal cast without backlashing?

They seem like they do the same thing. The less tension the more braking??

And how bout the wind factor?

TC, the spool tensioner or cast control as it is more commonly known, is generally for controlling overrun at the end of the cast, while the brake system is more for controlling overrun on the front end of the cast. In my opinion you are better off using as little of both as you can get away with, and use your thumb as necessary. The more you turn the cast control knob down the higher likelihood of cocking the spool shaft off to the side a bit. You'll be able to cast further and the spool will spin more freely and precisely.

Thanks. Yeah I understand that. More of a question of the purpose in our line of fishing. I've always thumbed the spool but wanted to know how the worked together for maximal efficiency.

Set the Cast Control knob so the spool will not have any sideward play, and is centered in the frame, once you have it set LEAVE IT ALONE there are fiber washers at both ends and if you crank the Cast Control knob tight you will dimple the fiber washers and the spool will have sideward play. OPEN UP your reel and turn on 1-2 more spool brakes. Look at your reel and if the spool is off to one side you have dimpled one of your washers and you should replace it.
