Anyone ever get a lazy follow or smaller fish and screw around with it like purposefully bumping it with the rod tip or something? I've been thinking of trying that just to see if they'd boil or jump or do something weird.

I wouldn't say I have ever done this with a follow or smaller fish. However I had a fish 2 years ago that would cruise the same area like clockwork every 45-60 mins, she was over 45 inches and wouldn't eat lures and ran for the hills when livebait was introduced, but she would come right next shore where i was fishing and let me run my rod along her sides and back and didn't seem to mind it one bit. I wasn't really poking her or bumping her I would consider it more like "petting". I want to think that she liked it, but fish are unusual creatures so it's hard to say for sure.

I've had fish follow (not large fish...maybe 40-42") and just sit there. In fact I could figure-8 *around* them, and they just sat there, like a spectator. The one I am thinking of didn't really want to turn at all, after (as I recall) a quick turn on one of my first 8's. But I must have figure-8'd it for over a minute, making smaller and smaller eights...trying to get it to turn or show some interest. I think I confused the silly thing, right up until I accidentally touched it with the rod tip. Then it was game over, bye-bye. Never saw that one again.

Several years ago I started pulling the bait away from fish sub 40" fish. After doing that for awhile I started having a few problems on larger fish. The lesson I learned was NEVER pull the bait away from smaller fish or try toying with them because those bad habits tend to carry over to fish I really want to catch. Now I try to treat them all the same.

I've hit 'em with the rod while figure eighting deep or in the dark and still caught them, so not sure it always bothers them.

I've actually poked them between the eyes when they come in, a light tap with the rod tip. Usually sends them into an explosion.
