Does anybody that fishs with creatures only use a single hook in the front of the bait and just let the fish inhale the creature for like 30 sec before setting the hook or do you use mulitple hooks?

I use a seven inch tail with a single hook, and set the hook on the line hop. You do not need the other hook![:bigsmile:]

I also use up to a 9" lizard as a jig trailer with only 1 hook. Very, very few missed strikes. Fewer yet tail bites. I don't know the reason but the fish will have the entire bait well over 90% of the time. At least this works for me. A lot more problems with the fish having their teeth sunk into the lead head and not able to get the hook to bite.

The only reason I ask this is because i had a fish aprox. 38" t-bone a creature on me and the tail was hanging outside the mouth on the leftside and the hook was hanging outside on the right size.Now this was a small numbers lake with skinny fish in it,could just be he was playing?

What do you do in a case like this??

Ive seen muskies keep creatures with not being hooked hang on for acouple mins(2-3).Also seen muskies chomp on a sucker for 15-20 mins and just sit there like they know its gonna kill you to see them do that(Circle hook set up).

Q: how long will a muskie keep a creature in its mouth?

It's been my experience that muskies will often swirl on or smack a lure with a closed mouth and offer almost no chance of a hookset, but when they close their mouth on a lure (especially soft creature baits) they're not going to let it go until they're darn good and ready. Have seen them swim all the way to the boat on many occasions when they weren't even hooked, just hanging on to the lure. On a few occasions, I've actually had them swim to the boat and into the net when they weren't hooked.

Can truthfully say that I'm not worried about trying to hurry the hookset - got all the time in the world.
I do, however, worry about being able to effectively move a bait in the mouth of a musky once it's clamped down on it, that's why I always set at least twice and will even go a third time if I think I need it.

Muskyone,

Who's lizard are you using? I have a bunch of the odyssey dragon lizards, but they are only about 7", not 9". I like to swim those with the 3/8 oz porky jig. Otherwise I bounce them along the bottom with the 5/8 version.

MuskieE;
I run Carolina's with 2 hooks.1 ft steel w/2 BB swivels
and 1 1/2 or 2 oz eggs ,then 4-6 foot fluoro w/2 6/0
singles. 1/4 " dowel pieces in baits for lift.
