| Has anyone had any expirience doing this? Are there kits for certain boats? Is it worth it? Just looking to get some insight. The carpet in the rig isn't too terrible, but it isn't great either. Wondering hat kind of job this is. Thanks for the help in advance. |

Location: Appleton | I'm with Steve on this one. I did this to my Tuffy a few years back. The worst part is getting rid of the old glue that held the carpet down. Once you do that the new carpet isn't too hard to install. I didn't find a kit. I just bought some boat carpet and some exterior carpet glue. It does help to have an extra guy when installing the carpet though. |

| I'm in the middle of this project right now. I've spent several hours pulling apart the boat: removing lids, hinges, carpet, trim, rivets, rivets, more rivets (from the trim and hinges on the lids), and scraping glue. Just waiting on the carpet I ordered to arrive at this point. It isn't complicated, but it is time consuming. My advice is to really take your time and invest the time and effort into doing a solid job with the carpet and glue removal. Be sure to invest in a couple of good scrapers and a real carpet knife with a case of blades (change the blade out frequently!). Good luck to you! |

I am also in the process of full removal/replacement. It's a 96 Lund ProV 1890 LE. As mentioned above, there will be way more prep time than install time, lots of hatches.
Luckily, I have 35 years of floor/carpet install experience to back me up, but I know I'll find some snags as I've never done a boat this size before. Get yourself a quality Razor hand Scraper or 2 to start, along with a carpet knife and alot of new blades....be careful and take your time.
As I go, I'll be happy to advise as best I can, either here, or PM's.
Lund just called and said the new matching carpet is in, so I will start on this soon, but I'm going to do this in segments and will probably take all summer.
I will be using it in the meantime, and I'm not going to rush it.

| Thanks for the heads up guys. I'm thinking I'm going to tackle this job, but take my time. I like the idea of doing it in sections. This is a 95 Lund Pro Guide with a few doors and hatches as well. My biggest question is on the main deck portions. Do you actually unscrew the decking and recarpet it when it is off? And how about the carpet under the side console. Does the console need to be removed? |

Location: Plainfield IL | Its an easy job that is time consuming. Agree with all the above posts. Here are pics of my Champion from a few years back. 1 rule, when you unroll the new carpet, keep it going the same way. Otherwise you will have a mismatch in the grain.

Yep, #1 rule of carpet install is to keep it all the same direction, I should have mentioned that. I don't plan on removing my console, the carpet will tuck under the edges, and wrap around it. A red rosin paper pattern can be made first of your layout....then laid over the top of the carpet and drycut first, leaving a little extra for trimming, if that helps. (I plan on doing this) Then place your carpet in position on the deck, and fold back one half at a time, applying your adhesive to the floor, completely to the edges. If you only do one half of each section at a time, it will allow you to anchor that carpet piece in perfect position for final trimming. I don't like the idea of contact cement....waterproof capet adhesive will allow you to half/half each piece easier.
And yes, I'm going to remove the screws and floor panels first....following the way it was done at the factory....with alot of thought first.  |

| I got lucky with the console on my Ranger 681; the wrap-around carpet came off in one piece so I was able to save this for a pattern. A few other key pieces worked out this way as well. I say save the old carpet for patterns wherever you can!
Also, Mark, what type of adhesive do you use on the lids? I was planning on using contact cement for that part. Is there a better alternative?

| Very nice looking project! I took the boat out on the water yesterday and was looking it over and it is going to be a heck of a project, but still thinking I want to tackle it. What are your thouhts on after the new carpet is installed and you go to replace the decking onto the structure and need to re-screw it down? Are you putting any adhesive on the screws to make sure they dont back out? Any other things that come to mind for anyone on this type of project? Thanks for all of the help already! |

Location: ladysmith, wi | there are kits sold on ebay for carpeting certain boats, acetone works well to remove the old glue just make sure work area is well ventilated, bassboatcentral has a good pictoral on correct way to cut your carpet for doing corners and lids, check it out, go to bbc click on boards and find bassboat restoration lots of help there

| Well the decision has been made and the carpet is coming out. I am curious where you guys are buying your carpet? I googled boat or marine carpet and there are 1,000 different places offering rug for boats. Anyone have good expirience with any of these companys? Bad? Or is is best just to call Lund and get replacement carpet from them? I would imagine from Lund it may cost my left arm though. |

Location: Minnesota | Bass Cat Boats do offer replacement carpeting in 24oz... Its been highly recommended by many at another website that has a forum specializing in boat renovation...
I can see that nobody had suggested using acetone to remove the glue... Just be sure to do a test spot on fiberglass first... Acetone worked great for me... along with quality scrapers... Just let the glue soak up the acetone... and scrape away... Make sure you have plenty of ventilation for this method... |

Location: Central WI | I purchased carpet from Mill's Fleet Farm. Very reasonable for good carpet. They also carry all the glue as well. I also used a wire brush on an angle grinder to remove the glue from metal parts, took it right off. I replaced all the wood parts with new marine grade plywood as well since I had it apart, why not make it last. I really don't want to do it again anytime soon. |

| I've been working on this project for a while now. Found this '96 681 in a marina yard last August. The hull was badly oxidized, the seats were torn, and the teal green carpet was torn and had moss growing in various spots. But the motor started right up and the underside of the hull was in super shape, as was the trailer. My 12 year old spent a couple weekends running a buffing wheel and brought back the shine on the polyflake. The lids were full of stress cracks, which I wet-sanded and painted with an automotive grade polymer and then ran a textured spray paint as a top coat. I started the carpet in late February and have been working on it weekends since then (mostly glue and rivet removal!). Here are some pics of where it's at as of today: new carpet and trim, seat skins from Ranger, and it's almost ready for the electronics to be installed...

| Hooked, that looks great! I have been working on the ol' Lund for a few hours now. A couple of hours here and a couple of hours there. All of the decking is out and the carpet removed. Thank God it isn't a fiberglass rig. The carpet literally came right off. A little sanding and all of the wood is prepped for new rug. On this boat it is just more tedious than anything. Just making sure where all of the bolts go and what not. I have samples ordered and will be buying some carpet soon. I am actually glad I did this now. The wood hasn't been effected yet so it will be pretty smooth sailing for here on out. I will try and post some pics after all is done. Thank you everyone for the help and advise. Without you guys I would not have attempted this. |

| Running _Hot I found this web page after I posted this and it as been a huge help. A lot of tips and tricks, but more importantly found the reviews I was looking for on which companies are the good ones to use. With that being said and just my two cents on this, but I just got samples in from boat carpet buys and samples from the guy on e-bay. While both nice carpet I feel the boat carpet buys rug is nicer. They are both 20oz, but this one seems to be a tighter pile with a pluser feel. Plus they are less expensive. Again just my opinion. I will post some pics of the completed project in a couple of weeks when we are done. Thanks for all the help guys. |

| i did mine as well, turned out great. just MAKE SURE YOU LET THE GLUE DRY!!! don't hurry things up to get out, let it fully cure cause if its not and gets wet or the sun heats it up the carpet will move and not be lined up with your cuts |

Location: Elgin, IL | I got started on the 96 Lund Pro V carpet replacement project, starting with the back deck, and livewell/battery compartment hatches. carpet came off pretty well, plywood needed some smoothing and patching and it's ready for new carpet.
One important tip here:
I see alot of boats with the carpet worn off right on the deck edge....due to wear and tear and the fact that the plywood creates a very square corner. So I decided to take my router with a round bit, and take the sharp edge off slightly....leaving me with a rounded corner that will allow me to glue the carpet better, and this will surely wear alot better over the years to come. ( A belt sander with medium grit paper will achieve the same look) I enclosed a picture.

| Removing everything was the easy part obviously. The carpet that was on the aluminum lids for the livewell, the battery box, the baitwell, and the aluminum underneath the console was a pain to remove! This was the longest part of the process. All of the front deck was through bolted and pretty easy to put back on. I replaced the wood on the main floor. I layed the old sheet over the new and drilled out all of the same holes. When it went back in the boat it all lined up and screwed right in. With the thickness of the new carpet we had some challenges getting everything to fit right up front at the doors and we needed to do so some slight modifications to get it to all line up.
All in all it wasn't too bad, but not something I would want to do again in the near future. I am just glad it is done. I did the project with my dad and as things got torn out and started to go back in the suggestions to do this and that started coming. Hence why the console is painted. I could have probably been done two weeks ago, but there were a few adds that I was not expecting to do. Fathers can be so influential! I am very happy with it though and it is ready to fish. Again thank you for all of the advice and help. |

We just added a casting platform and put in two aluminum hatches, had the carpet glued, everything was tight, no issues. Had it out this weekend in the rain and it literally peeled right off, no adhesion whatsoever to the aluminum. Yes, carpet adhesive was indoor/outdoor. Did you have to rough up the surface of the aluminum to get the adhesive to stick? |

| I had to use a stripper to remove all of the old glue on the aluminum. I did use a power sander and lightly roughed the surface. Instead of using the indoor/ outdoor adhesive that we used in all of the wood I used a spray adhesive from a flooring supply store. I discussed with them the best way to go about this and this is what they recommended. They had concerns using the indoor/ outdoor on the aluminum. They thought it would have issues similar to what you are describing. I hope it works. It doesn't seem to be going anywhere, but I guess we will see. |

I wrapped up my boat carpet, so included a few shots. For info, PM me and I will try to help you out, I learned alot about my boat during this project.
I took my time, and did a few things that others may not. For instance: I would suggest using a router, (or belt sander) and rounding down the step edges that are normally square. This is a spot that always gets alot of wear, and rounding them will help with durabilty. I also polished my seat bases before re-installing them.
I estimated about 45 to 50 hours of labor for my 19' Lund, Start to Finish.

| Looks great! I asume your boat is a lot newer than my Lund. After looking at your front deck pictures I realized that the aluminum inserts for the lids are the exact same ones that are on my rig and that is a 95. Not too much changes in technology there. Looks really good! |

Location: Oconomowoc, WI | I'm in the middle of a project as well, and all of the info from this thread helped a lot. I'm working on a 96 Stratos 217 that I purchased earlier this year. I've got all of my lids covered but I've still got my front deck and main floor to do.
What I really need some help/advice on is a little fiberglass repair on the main floor behind the seat. The guy I purchased it from said a battery was dropped which caused a pretty hole in the fiberglass down to the wood subfloor. There's about 1/4" between the subfloor and fiberglass on one side of the hole, toward the center its flush.
I just want to fill the hole so that I can lay the carpet over and it's not too noticeable. I don't think it really affects it structurally? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Also, I used contact cement on the lids and it seemed to work really well. Just looking for a specific product that might be a little more forgiving for the main floor. Thanks!
