| Getting a new boat and going to be getting a 60hp and 9.9hp. Which brand should I go with? |

| I'd go Merc all the way. But that's me. Both 60HP and 9.9 Pro-Kicker are great motors.
I say work with the dealer you trust, then choose your motor brand. |

I would say go with the biggest displacement engine of the two. More displacement means more "umph" when you need it. If one has a lower gear ratio, I would also take that into consideration as well...higher gear ratio also means better torque and even more "umph"
Both are great motors and honestly, i don't think you can go wrong with either one.

Location: Bloomington, MN | If you can go with a 70 hp., the new Yamaha 70 tiller is SWEET. Why the kicker? If you are concerned about getting stranded just buy a used outboard. You can troll all day with the Yamahas. |

Location: 31 | For me it was a no-brainer to go with a Yamaha, even though I know mercury makes a fine product as well.
I can't really give you an informed opinion on the 60 hp, but certainly can on the Yamaha T9.9. I have had two T-8s, and both of them performed and operated flawlessly after hundreds of hours of muskie trolling. I currently have a T9.9 and that motor is basically the T8 with about 20% more horsepower. |

| I too am looking between these two as well, here is what i have found, the Yamaha comes with the variable trolling handle so you can adjust your idle up or down 50 rpm at a time, on mercury it's like a $1000 option. I also think yamaha's trim/shifter are layed out a little better, But i currently have 50hp four stroke mercury and it has been bullet proof though. |

| Yamaha is as dependable as the sun coming up in the east. I put a ton of hours on mine and can only speak to it's performance. Since 00' I've never and I mean never once had a mechanical issue. Heck, I changed boats back in 07' because I couldn't get a Yamaha engine on it.

Location: colorado | my big engine and kicker are both Yamaha's. The kicker actually has several hundred more hours on it. I have not had one issue with either of these motors. when I get them serviced they plug their computer into my motors and the only thing that ever comes up is that I have bumped the key to start them when they were already running. I have learned to look for the water coming out of them to tell that they are running because i can not hear them. |

Location: Lebanon,Mo | The Yamaha variable trolling control system is only good up to around 950-1000rpms. My 40hp has it and you can drop a little below factory setting idle and then up appx. to 1000rpms.Probably a good option if trolling for walleye,crappie,etc... |

| I went with a 70HP Yamaha tiller for my boat. I had a 50HP Yamaha on a prior boat and it was rock solid. I believe the Merc 60 and Yamaha 60 share the same displacement and gear ratio, so that's probably not a big deal. The comment about the tiller handle is a good one though. The Yamaha comes with all of the nice features standard, whereas you have to upgrade to the Big Tiller handle on the Merc to get them, which would add to the cost.
I think either engine would be great, probably comes down to personal preference, price, which dealer you like more, etc.
