I figured this would be as good a place to ask as any. I'm taking a job up in the Minneapolis metro area in the Brooklyn Park, Coon Rapids, Fridley area. I'd probably be looking for an apartment at first just so I can get settled somehow. My start date is in the middle of April so I don't have too much time. Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks.

Coon Rapids may be your best option. Lived in an apartment in Fridley and had my truck and boat vandalized on 2 different occasions and about 6K worth of fishing gear etc. stolen from the truck on a different occasion. I rented the apartment in November and it was quiet, by April the "natives" were restless and hanging out everywhere. $1000/month and the place was full of "undesireables". Check out the places you may want to live at different times of the day and ask a lot of questions before you sign a lease. Brooklyn Park has a nickname from those that live in the Cities. The 2nd word in the towns name is the opposite of "light". Infer what you will. May the force be with you.......

They actually recommended I live a little outside the metro area, like around Elk River and up to the northwest of Brooklyn Park. Thanks for the tip

I would live south and commute north. Traffic will be the most manageable if you do.

Depending on your budget, there are some nice places for rent in Plymouth (no crime).

I recommend searching a site like Rent.com for your target city when you pick one.

I would buy instead of rent. My sister lives in Champlin and you can get some pretty good deals on homes. There are a few houses for sale on the river for a good price depending on what your budget is.

I guess I would ask specifically where will you be working and how long do you want to commute? You have a lot of options. Maple Grove may be a good area for you depending on what you are looking for. Should be a lot of decent rentals and it's a relatively young suburb with lots of amenities. Easy commute between BP and MG. New Hope and Robbinsdale may also be options. I have a house in Golden Valley and love it, close to everything but still pretty mellow and great for my family. Good luck

Need more location specifics - suggestions would be drastically different depending on what part of Brooklyn Park you'll be in.

In the Blaine, Coon Rapids Area (Northern Burbs) you can get to White Bear Lake, Bald Eagle, Forest Lake pretty easily going East/North East and get to Tonka, Eagle, and the Downtown Lakes in about the same amount of time going South/South West.

In Maple Grove/Plymouth (West Burbs) area you cut down the drive time to Tonka and Eagle significantly, but also raise the drive to White Bear and the others significantly, Downtown lakes would stay about the same.

Drive might be a little longer than you want but Waconia was a great place to live and fish.

Brooklyn park is in the police report alot its an extension of North Mpls
stay out, except Rocky Rococo pizza on the blvd
How young are you,how important is nite life SE MPL's is not bad freeway systems close lots of hangouts
Champlain is nice too and close to BP but a little too tame for me
uptown area of MPL's is great and you can shorefish muskies in Calhoun chain,Harriet,,, tons of hangouts

Join either the North Metro or Twin cities chapter of Muskies inc for lottsa fun

Well since this is a musky forum, you obviously want to be fishing. Which lakes do want to target in the Metro? Do you plan to fish in the evening as well as the weekend? Do you plan to drive to destinations on the weekends or stay local? I would determine these things and then decided what kind of commute to work is acceptable. Also depening on your career choice, you should consider where all the jobs are in the city. Nice thing about the Twin Cities is you have lots of choices, but the area is pretty big so if I were you I would decide if you want to focus on the West lakes or the East lakes and then pick a suburb accordingly.

If you're going to be working in the areas you listed I would pick Maple Grove. I moved there almost 3 years ago from South Minneapolis and I enjoy it very much. Easy to hop on 610 in Maple Grove now and get to all those areas. Quick drive to Tonka too.

Good luck!

I lived in SE Minneapolis for 6 years while I was in school, Como Ave area. I absolutely loved living there. Both 35W and 94 are within 5 minutes because you're right down the block from 280. Either downtown isn't far. Nice bars and food in the area. Tons of women because you are just off of campus. And it's actually a quiet neighborhood...had skunks, racoons, foxes roaming around because of the railroad. It might have changed because of the stadium, but that is definitely an area I would look at.

Thanks for the many suggestions. Most places I look at online seem to run 800 a month and up for something decent. I really wasn't wanting to spend that much but looks like I won't really have much of a choice. The only two muskie lakes I've really heard up around that area are Tonka and Bald Eagle. Moving up from Central Illinois I don't really know much about the area.

Brooklyn Park - from brooklyn blvd north is a great place to live. i would ignore the comments above about not living there. Try heading north on a Fri or Sat from the south metro and it will help you decide in real hurry to live in the north metro. Get to Mille Lac in about 1 hr 30 mins.

LOL

Drive time to your chosen lake is a big deal IMO. Just my opinion, but I'd rather live closer to the water and then spend a 10 extra minutes in the car for commuting. Opinions vary I'm sure.

LOL! Been here for 3 years and I don't have any problems getting around. Now if you're an agoraphobic you might want to consider Chaska.

North Metro is sweet because it's closer to Mille Lacs, Vermilion and every other lake that holds a state record. Plus there are plenty of options for metro lakes up there. South and West Metro are nice because there are plenty of local muskie lakes and I don't have to lock my truck at night.

Since we're on the topic. Fact: Springfield, IL has a suburb called Country Club abutting a suburb called Koke Mill. Man, if MN would name its suburbs correctly people would know where to move to!

I lived in Elk River for 6 years and it would be a good lower cost alternative to the city and you can get to Coon Rapids really easy. For muskies it is great to head north to Mille Lacs, but sucked for trying to get out for a few hours after work as it took a half hour at least to get to anything decent. It will cost a few bucks more, but would lean towards Plymouth or Maple Grove.

Wow lots of suggestions thank you. The actual area I will be working the majority of my time is on the edge of Fridley and Coon Rapids. I'm also 30, single(well will be since the g/f did NOT take the news well at all), and I have no children. I also have a house down here in Decatur I'm having to get rid of, so not costing an arm and a leg would be a nice plus.

Trout, I have an apartment building in Champlin with both 2 and 3 bedroom units available. Its a short commute to Eagle and Tonka. It's near hwy 10 and 169 so heading north is no prob. Very close to Coon Rapids. Also downtown Anoka has great nightlife and is within walking distance. Give me a call if you're interested. 612-804-3399. P.S. The 2 brs are under 800 and building is newly remodeled.

I would take the longer commute of a west or south suburb any day over living in the North Ghetto.

Try Crystal, 15 min from tonka, 10 from eagle. Grandma selling her house in crystal for 120,000 well kept. Easy access to downtown to.
