I've heard some good things about twitch baits in the spring and was wondering if you guys had any recommendations on which to get?

Thanks,
Brandon

Gotta go with the Big Game 6" Surface twitch. The 8" is pretty cool also. Slammer 6" twitchers are good baits too.

Big game 8" surface twitcher is always on one rod first trip out every season. Twitch, rip, pause, pull, reel until you figure out how they want it, and they always do one way or another.

Twitch baits are good all season! I typically use a slower retrieve earlier in the season and speed things up and get more erratic as the season progresses. The Big Game/Custom X lines cover all situations. I'm not one that subscribes to the small bait early philosophy, but more tailor my bait size to the size range of the fish and forage in a particular body of water. One of my favorite all time baits is the 9" Big Game . They can be cast or trolled and are deadly rippin' through deeper cabbage. The 6" and 8" Surface Twitch are perfect for pockets in the weeds and stuff that comes near the surface. The Custom X baits have a thicker body and a unique wiggle and can run a tad deeper. A really underrated technique is rippin' the big stuff like the 12" Big Game and the 12" Custom X. I'm a caster 99% of the time and often joke with friends that I'm too ADHD to troll. Although this can be physically taxing , with the right rod/reel, fatigue is much less. These baits move fish that ignore other presentations. The "shock" factor. I will be trolling the 16" and 21" Custom X this Fall though in search of the Queen. I know that you asked about baits for the Spring, but don't overlook the big stuff early. Ya never know......

Another vote for Big Games and I'll also second the vote for Slammers. One that doesn't get a lot of mention but is a great little twitcher is the Big Fork 6" Twitch Darter. A little different body shape and action that also works very well.

I'm fairly new to the hunt but love using believers on the deep setting from spring to fall. But will be adding the above lures to my list.

When the fish hit the Big Game Surface Twitch do they tend to hit it on the top of the water or when its rising? And is it only good over the top of cabbage or is it also good in deeper water?

Hands down the Fishall Lures (Talonz) Little Claws! A bait I have fished with for close to 10 years, and that thing works great! Nice slow rise to it, and produces a lot of flash. A great attribute of it is they are made from oak I believe!

Made by Kingfisher whom use to frequent this board on occasion but haven't seen him around much lately.

I like the surface twitch over deeper water when the shad are schooling or the white bass are busting said shad. Depending on the lake/reservoir, the bass will munch 'em too!

firstfish92- The fish hit the Big games when you pause or as it is floating up for the most part, but hits can and do come at any time. Yes they can be good over deep water alot of time the Muskys are holding in the top 10' over open water in spring, it is warmer.
For May I like the 6" and 7" Big Game twitch. They have some great color paterns.
Another good twitcher is the MF Shad from MuskieTrain.
Both are great baits and put alot of fish in my boat.
Thanks,
Jeff Hanson

Twitching baits it’s my favorite way to fish. My influenced favorite is the 7.5” Molly.  I love the way it can be finesse fished - taps, slack line taps, double taps, rips and pulls really make the bait come alive.  I love the way it kicks out perpendicular to the retrieve and then will begin to slowly rise up. Then add another snap to kick it out the other way and keep it suspending right above the weed tops.

I also think the big husky jerk is a great twitch bait in the early spring, love that bait in Tennessee shad pattern.  In the spring I’ve caught every game fish in the lake on that bait.

Look into his other baits as well. Pretty sure he makes an 8" version of the little claw.

Shallow Invaders rock!! I have had ok luck ripping them over weeds, but my best luck is banging them off the rocks! Also my #1 throw back bait.

I also feel twitch baits are one of the best hookers out there for a bait. Besides a bucktail or straight retrieving a crankbait nothing beats a twitch bait for hooking percentages in my book.

For the Shallow Invaders: When casting, they will typically run 6” - 2’. If you work them slow you can get them through some pretty heavy slop. The bait is very erratic so it will give you some nice side to side action during the retrieve. You can also troll them at 3’-5’ up to about 4MPH. I usually run around 3.5MPH as they will blow out at higher speeds, the erratic nature mentioned above translates to “wander” when trolling.

A good tweak to the bait is to replace the two smaller hooks with a single large “T-ed” 7/0 hook on the front hanger. Despite what the above poster said, this bait can be troublesome on the hookup in its stock configuration. This modification helps out quite a bit with that issue.

Depends at what depth the weeds top out at. If they top out at 17' then I would say a hooker jr.
