Curious what you guys think of either an HDS-7 Gen2 w/ LSS-1 and HDS-5 Gen1 networked, or an HDS-8 Gen2 w/ LSS-1? Both are about the same $$$ after rebates. I've been torn for a few days over this and can't decide.

That to me depends on your situation in the boat. Are you using one finder for driving and fishing? If so I would get the 8. If you want a unit at the bow and one at the wheel, get the 7 and 5.

I'd agree with Ryan, that's one avenue. However, after seeing how much faster the HDS Gen 2 is, I'd probably go Gen2 and if your wanting a HDS up front, wait and get one when you can. The speed of the Gen2 is awesome, I'd highly recommend the Gen2 units. Otherwise, go HDS-7 & 5 Gen2.

Either way you'll be happy.

Thanks guys. I'm just concerned that if I went 7 & 5, would I be missing out on an 8?

If I went with an 8, I'd want to be able to move it to the bow from the console and back frequently. Does this cause a wiring problem? How would the cables be run compared to if I was networking a 7 and a 5?

Just got off the phone with Lowrance.

In order to move one unit from the console to the bow, I would either need an extension cable for the traditional transducer and lay it up in the bow and coil it back up when back at the console, or if I had the wires buried, I would need a switchbox to "T" the signal from the traditional sonar. The ethernet network would be the same as if I had 2 units using structure scan.

So if I went 7 & 5, I wouldn't have to monkey around with an extra switch or extra cables in the way.

I'm just having a hard time justifying an extra $600 over the 7 to go to an 8. But many others keep saying to go with an 8.

Is an 8 really $600 better than the 7?

Personally, I would not want extra cables lying around the boat and additional switches and that seems like more to go wrong. Keep things simple.

Thanks a lot guys. I'm going with the Gen2 7 and the Gen1 5 instead of a Gen2 8. After rebates, it's a wash. I wasn't going to pay more than what an 8 would cost, so I figure I'll get more bang for the buck with 2 vs. 1.
