Location: North/Central WI | Anybody ever drill the rattles out of a 10" Jake? I am looking for a little help so I can try to avoid ruining one during the process. I would like to know what diameter drill bit to use...also where on the bait to drill the hole. Thanks.... |

| I could be wrong. But I believe the "rattles" in a jake (and many other baits) are BBs. They are placed in different chambers of the bait. There purpose is to weight the bait properly so it runs correctly. The MFGs say they are rattle but just sugar coating the fact they are using them as inexpensive wieghting.
So I believe if you remove them they bait will no longer run correctly. Again I could be mistaken. |

| Just trying to help brainstorm....couldn't you leave the BBs in and just add epoxy into their chamber to stop the noise they make? This way the weight will not be removed, but the sound will be stopped.

Location: Chesterton, Indiana | You may want to look into this with more care then just drilling. Many lures use a plastic tube as the chamber that you may not be able to drill directly into.

Location: North/Central WI | I found a pic of a "naked" jake and you can see where the weights are...there are 2 lead balls located at the bottom of the bait between the front 2 hooks. I will try drilling and using epoxy to silence them. Thanks... |

| I've silenced 90% of my jakes. Hold them up to a bright light (or check out a naked jake to find the rattle chambers), drill a hole, put in ~1/2 teaspoon of epoxy, cover the hole with tape, position the lure completely vertical and shake the bait until the weights are exactly in the center, let the epoxy cure and peel the tape off. |

Location: Land of the Musky | You can also drip about 2-3 ml of veg oil in the bait and that stops them from rattling. |
