Cell Phones. The good, ugly, and my biggest fish.

I got a cell phone about a year ago. My family and I decided that I should have one as I am either fishing, at work, or somewhere between doing something else related to either. I thought it to be a good idea, but what a pain it had become(till yesterday). I never take it in the boat, but it is constantly ringing, and it is always ringing at the wrong times(my girlfriend likes to call alot, as it is often the only time we talk during the day). I began to think the thing was useless, and had no value to fishing whatsoever. Enter last week when Don and I went out, and the thing rang in the boat(I was expecting a call from the drywaller and my dad), i answered and Don cracks a musky. This happened again minutes later and I was ready to toss the thin in the lake!!!!

Yesterday I went on a usual halfday fishing trip and was supposed to be home at 5:30. The phone rings as I'm on my way home and it is Monica. I was pumped about catching 30" and 43" muskies on my new Reef hawg, and told her I'd be home in a half hour. She told me she'd been trying to call and tell me she had to stay at school late and that I could keep fishing. I was already on my way home, but there was one more lake nearby that doesn't have many muskies in it, but some nice ones. I just got out, grabbed my fanny pack with tools and camera, and walked the shoreline as I casted. I made about 25 casts and was tapping the bottom, so I made a really long cast to try to get the Jake deeper. The bait stopped dead halfway in, and I really thought it was a log. Never had a fish grab and stop me dead like that to where I thought I was snagged. The snag just swam slowly taking drag, and I n\knew it was big, but I thought I had it snagged as it just swam up and down the bank taking drag, not head shaking, not coming up. I finnally got it clost to shore to see it was hooked in the mouth, and reached down to grab the leader(mistake), fish took off ripping my fingers with the tag end of the wire on the leader. Finnally landed my biggest musky ever from the states at 48.5" X 22.75". I laid it in the wet grass with my rod right next to it and snapped a picture so my friends know I'm not b.sing. I think I'll keep trhe cell phone!!!!

On a side note, the split ring on the middle hook of my jake was almost completely bent off, as I was able to just turn it to get it off. I will now Bucher ring my Jakes.

Reef Hawg cell phones come in handy when you and your pals want to share fish. I don't use the marine radio to much for details but the cell phones shine when you network among other fishermen. We work together to put more action and fish in our boats. Keep the phone, you don't have to answer it, thats what caller id and voice mail is for.[]

Cool story. Just goes to show you that a huge $25000 + boat isn't always needed to catch fish.

Unfortunately I've had the opposite luck with cell phones. I had one of the biggest follows of the year coming in the other day. When she got within 25' my cell goes off and the fish bolts! [:(]

Since I'm in sales and do OCCASIONALLY skip out and go fishing in the afternoon, the cell comes in pretty handy. The only time I thought I was busted was when I was fishing tonka and while talking to my boss, a 35' cigerete boat with through hull pipes came roaring by. He said "what was THAT", knowing he was a motorcycle guy I just said "Harely" (sp?) and he was cool.

cellphones- hate 'em most of the time, but loved it once on the lake. finished for the day and found out my big motor was dead, no trim/tilt either... checked all the fuses, nothing. called the dealer from the boat and was directed to a hidden fuse under the motor cowl. all fixed! i think i'll keep bringing it...

ps- reefhawg:
yup, those split rings are crap- ask paul klein about the 25lber he lost on an ernie cuz of a lousy split ring. he's got wolverines on all his baits now... []

Good point Mike about details. Once my buddy(who just moved to Marinette) gets a boat(hint hint Greg) that will come in handy on Green Bay.
