| Worth the drive? Fished it a long time ago and had a little luck but nothing spectacular. It seems close to the South end of Lac Seul. |

| No replies yet... I'll help best I can. This is, by far, my favorite area of the drive to locations in Ontario. Can't put my finger on it, but I just love this area. I think this area is definitely worth the drive. I haven't fished Big Vermilion much, so I can't speak to it specifically. But yes, very close to south end of lac seul. Great area for multi species trip. Lac Seul is some of the best walleye water in Canada, plus huge pike and muskies in the northeast end. For some fast action muskie fishing and some of the best smallmouth fishing anywhere, try the little vermilion system. Plus the entire enlish river system offers good fishing. IMO, any fishing trip is worth the drive if youre fishing with good company. Good luck on your decision. |

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | It has changed a lot since a long time ago. All the deep weeds are gone, now you are lucky if you can find some in deeper than 8 feet. Used to have cabbage growing in 20-22 feet in between islands and points, not any more. So the fish that used to use the weeds are now all over creation. The pike population that used to keep things interesting is way down. You won't get them to play with lures much anymore unless you are willing to go after them deeper. The West end is totally changed, darker water running in from Centerfire Creek has wiped out all the deeper cabbage that used to blanket the area and even the shallower weeds are more sparse.
No more live bait/dead bait of any kind allowed. Artificials only for everything. The limits and sizes you can have on lakers and smallies have drastically changed and therre is a slot on pike. You need to watch the regs very closely.
Lac Seul, if it is the same as the last time I fished it, allow you no live gamefish in possesion. If you are going to keep something it has to be dead and right now. If a warden checks you and finds a live gamefish you are screwed. Also watch the regs on the upstream lakes from Lac Seul, they have changed a lot over the years.
Still a pretty area though, and I enjoy fishing up there. |

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | Giants? Better believe it! Why it was common knowlege back when George ran the Big V lodge back in the 70's that one hung around the narrows. When people anchored and fished for bass it would come and rest under their boat in the shade and you could see the head on one side and the tail on the other. It was reliably measured as longer than the old 7' couch in the resort! Now if THAT isn't a giant I don't know from giant! If I had a buck for every time I heard that story, I could almost pay for a trip back up there. Gosh, can you imagine how big it is now?
Reefs? No more than any other shield lake in the area, just seems like a lot more because you can see them in the relatively clear water when it's sunny. I can show you more on Lac Seul than are on the map too and those you won't see. You want reefs, try Minnitaki. Now that lake has reefs! Ooof da... |

So is there a public access? I know there is a drive to resort but I'm just looking to do a day trip when staying in Sioux Lookout. |

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | Yes there is are several public accesses to Big V, one on the south side of the highway (664?) going to Hudson, just before you get to the bridge at the Big V lodge, and another on the far side of Hudson which has a nasty boulder right out from the launch. There is a launch for Lac Seul via Lost Lake on the north side of the road going to Hudson about halfway to town from the launch on Big V.
Lac Seul has some navigation bouys and day markers on the main travel routes up the lake, so do the rest of the English River lakes upstream as far as I know, while the Vermilions don't. It's boater beware.
If the mill is running, watch out for chip trucks going and coming from Hudson and trains on the way to Lac Seul if you use that launch. On the curves west of the Big V lodge you can actually see the rear wheels of the chip trucks come off the highway as they make the corner and see little puffs of smoke sometimes as they hit again. Neat! There is a public access for Abram Lake close to the corner where the road heads towards Hudson, and from there if you have a set of big ones, you can run up the rapids into Minnitaki, but unless you know where you are going I'd advise against it as there are boat eating boulders just under the surface over 3/4 of the way across the opening and you need to be on plane to make it up in the good part.
All in all, I'm guessing you have access to nearly 1/2 million acres of water to explore in the general area, so it takes a few years before you start to learn things. |

I believe there is both a public access and a campground located right next to each other.... |
