I am a seasoned pike fisherman, however I am new and still learning to musky fish. I mostly fish from my kayak, and I am looking for opinions and advice for a musky reel. I would like something that is durable and made for casting. I have been looking at the Saltist and have read that they are not optimal for repeated casting, so I am not sure if thats the way to go. I currently use an Abu 5500 and a 6500, but they don't retrieve fast enough. I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me.
Thank you
Greg

Nothing wrong with a 6500 except for using bigger lures.

Shimano Cardiff is a nice $109 reel. I have a few that have held up quite well over the years. I would say they are better than the $69 Abu's.

I am planning on adding some big bucktaiils, would you still suggest the Abu garcia? The only reason I ask is I use large Mepps lures with it now(6500 c3) and it does not seem to handle them well.

How big is big for bucktails? 10? 8?

if you are pulling dbl 10's, i think the Revo winch is the best bet.

A 6500 C3 or Cardiff can both be used for pulling dbl 10s. Add a powerhandle to either one and it can be fairly easy.

Not saying it's the best option for dbl 10s but it will work and its a great all around reel for the money. Depending on how often you throw big blades you might wear the pawl & wormgear out a little quicker which is a wear item anyways. Personally, I'd stay away from the Revo Winch - one trick pony IMO. The 4.6 gear ratio is too slow for 90% of lures, burning a bucktail is almost impossible with the winch.

The issue with double 10s is you need power, durability, and speed to really get the most out of them. Lower end reels will break down under the wear of big blades (even the satlwater stuff breaks down to these baits) and likely will have either power or speed, but not both. That is why you see guys going to heavier duty saltwater stuff. The Saltist and Torium are both excellent options at the sub $200 price point.

Also, do not undervalue the line pick up. You can certainly burn blades on a slow reel, espeically one that is powerful, but can you get the same speed on cast 300 that you got on cast 1? Chances are the answer is no. The fatigue aspect of the equaution is really where a high quality reel proves it's value.

IMO I'd save up for a heavy hitting Shimano product, but that is just me.

I can not believe you are having a hard time using your Abu 6500 reel with Mepps spinners ??????????? Sounds like you have a problem with your reel. I can see working the reel hard with Cowgirls But Mepps? somethings wrong... A good working 6500-C3 is priced right and will give you years of use. JMO Mike

Right. By "large mepps spinners" maybe he's talking about the H210s. Otherwise a C3 should handle Musky Killers and the like easily. If you're looking for more speed get a 6600 C4 - good multi-use reel for smaller bucktails up to dbl 8s, topwaters, and jerkbaits. Make sure your spool is all the way full too, if its not it will effect the speed for sure.

For the price you can get a new 6500C3, get a new one of those and a power handle. It is not economical to buy gears and upgrade parts in C3's. I have seen some go for 50 bucks new on Ebay here lately. The gearing in your 8 year old reel is probably worn out.

10000i reels are very large and I would not be comfortable palming it to reel in anything.
