Last year I went on a Muskie tip to Eagle out of Andy Meyers lodge and all the guides were fishing a hybrid leader system the master Steve herbeck invented/brainchilded. It was a double fluorocarbon lead tied directly to the line. It was about 40 inches and our guide explained the muskies on eagle roll exsessively at the boat and the doubled leader prevented cut offs. Anyone ever tie or use this system? Looked sturdy and the knot with the doubled line seemed to cast real well for our guide.

Stealth Tackle makes Gregg Thomas's Hybrid Leader System. It's 3' of 80lb fluorocarbon tied to a 4" solid wire leader.

From what you described it sounds like Steve replaced the wire section with a heavier fluorocarbon tied to a slightly lighter fluorocarbon. Sounds like a great idea. I'll have to give that a try.

Its actually doubled from the line knot all the way to the snap. So you have two fluro leaders. I ckecked out the the stealth, similar but I dont like the wire.

That's a little confusing. Here's what I was originally picturing in my mind. Is this close to what it looked like?

The main line connects to a long section of light fluorocarbon (80 or 100lb). That section is tied to a shorter, heavier piece of fluorocarbon (130 or 150lb). The heavier fluorocarbon is then tied to a snap.

Catch,

I know it sounds weird but the leader consisted of two Fluor section. I know if Steve's guys are using it it is probably the most foolproof and effective. Granted the average Muskie in eagle blow away the average of vilas and most eagle lake muskies hit at the boat it's best to be prepared for the big one

I had a fish bite me off when using the 80lb floro to 4" wire. I was throwing a monster tube. Cut through the floro like it was butter. Needless to say, I don't trust 80lb floro anymore.

What's on the lure end? Or is it tied directly to the lure. Bimini Twist, Spider Hitch were traditionally used in the salt for doubling leaders. I am not sure how they work with a flouro to braid connection, a double uni can also be used with a double leader.

The Fluor attached to a barrelswivel and a snap I haven't seen before. I was thinking of using a corkscrew to barrel swivel instead when I figure out the knots. Guess I could just send Steve an email so this post doesn't get to mysterious.

There could be many ways to do it... But prolly the easiest I could think of is just double up the section of flouro (if you want a 40 inch leader, youd need an 80 inch section of flouro) and then tie your braid to it via and albright knot. Then on the terminal end you'd have to crimp the sections to your snap. IF you dont like crimps you could possibly knot it by tying a double line uni knot also, however this would be a pretty bulky knot. There is probably a better knot you could tie, but I can't think of it at the moment.
