If so, how did it work out ? A friend gave me some and was wondering if it is worth trying ? Thanks

Absolutely the worst wood. Use something else.

Ipe's specific gravy ranges from .85 to .97 ( O means it starts to sink) then you add
finish and hooks and hardware so it sinks like a anchor. It is pretty dense. Red cedar
specific gravity is about .43 so it pretty buoyant compared to ipe.
There is also a lot of resin in this exotic wood which means more steps to insure proper sealing and more risk in temperature swings. It can easily blow your paint work. I suggest domestic wood hardwood species, 6-9% moisture content, seal thoroughly and you'll be off to a good start.

Google '' Janka hardness test '' it measures wood in terms of pounds-force. Just to give you an idea how hard this wood is, according to this scale, balsa is rated at 100 lbf. Ipe is rated at 3684 lbf.

I've worked with Brazilian Ebony wich measures at 3692 lbf and it's really hard on tools. I made a glider out of it in fact....it has it's application...sinks real fast!
