Location: Northern Illinois | Just dreaming of muskie fishing and fine tuning my spring surface twitching techniques...
I was wondering how many of you let the rings disappear, give a quick twitch or two right after spash down and then pause, or start twitching all the way back right away when working 0-3 ft shallow twitchers? More success with any of the methods? Or, does everybody just mix it up? |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I have found that with spring twitching, I use a bait that will actually suspend....but essentially the same thing.
Lure hits the water, couple of twitches, then a pause. Couple more twitches, then a pause. with a bait that will almost suspend (rises extremely slow) the fish just hammer the bait.
With surface twitching, I think it is more of the sound you can get the bait to make as you twitch it under. you can get a really nice "ploop" on some baits. The rings (ripples) I feel are not going to be anything to really be concerned about... I think a better question is, how long should I pause my bait? In that case, I would let the fish tell you what they want, and adjust from there. Some days the fish might want a faster pattern, others slower...

Location: Northern Illinois | Thank you for the response. Yes, I am trying to get a feel for the timing in between pauses that other fisherman find most effective. My question on twitching right away when it lands I think centers around what I think are a couple of different views. One is let the bait sit for a few seconds so fish in the area have time to locate it and check it out. The other is start twitching right away in case it lands right on top of, or near a fish, so it looks as if the bait is struggling or trying to get away (get a reaction on landing before the fish gets spooked and moves on). |

| I may pause for 2-3 seconds here and there, but that's about the longest. Not saying longer pauses might not be effective, I just don't have the patience to leave a sure sitting there not moving. |
