Guys, I've decided to take my 9 yr old step-son on his first b@lls to the wall muskie fishing trip. Looking at two different weeks in the july/august time frame. I'm expecting to do quite a bit of night fishing. Which moon would you prefer for night fishing? New moon or full? Its a canadian shield lake. Thanks for the input.

I think either one can be good you just have to adjust your presentations for the conditions. I guess my advice would be that if you are taking a 9 year old I would strongly recommend the full moon over the new moon as it will not be pitch black and it may be easier for them to fish with the added light. Also...it is easier to see the bait and a fish follow during a full moon.

Best fo luck to you on your trip whichever you decide.

I'll definately take a new moon if I want to fish all night. Ive had very limited success once a full moon is "up" but the hr before and after moon rise can be very good. Good advice from Brett though for a 9 year old.

Full moon is much easier to fish like you said but new moon is generally better for me. Full moon can be good if there is cloud cover after the moon comes up but that helps either way. I think I only had 1 night this summer where we did good after moon rise on full moon and is was cloudy and a little rainy.

Pretty much what Mr. Budrow said.
In my experience with a steady barometer and clear skies the majors and minors during a full moon are good and the rest of the time is terrible (not just slow, terrible). New moon the majors and minors are good but the action is much more consistent the rest of the time.

One of the guys I night fish with has lighting in his boat so it really doesn't matter if it's pitch or not. If you have lighting set up that goes away from the boat so doesn't blind you I'd say new moon. For imagination sake and being able to almost really see something tough to beat the full moon. If it was me taking the young guy up I'd say full moon. He will have his imagination running wild on the sights and sounds!

Both Johnny!----- anytime you can get on the water is the right time------watch the weather though--- that can play a bigger role than the moon phase sometimes. Good luck, Jobu

Aside from moon phases, just be ready for the sunset onslaught of mosquitoes on the Shield at that time of the year. Unless you have mesh netting, it can be brutal for a while once dark hits. Many guys leave the water when they come out in full....no set time to get off the water, but the choice is made for you unless you really want to tough it out or have the right gear. Just something to be aware of with the little guy in the boat. Miserable for anybody, but might change a kid's attitude toward the trip in a hurry if he gets into a mosquito cloud on day one.

Yeah---the mosquito invasion is BRUTAL unless you make youself mosquito-proof beforehand. How is this accomplished, you might ask? My partner and I devised a system last year for the opener and in 7 full days/nights of fishing we only got bit ONCE!------Hard to believe, I know---but here's how you render the mosquito army useless. First get some good lightweight rain gear---bibs and jacket. Then you can purchase a mosquito headnet at WALMART---$1.97 each--what a bargain. The most important part is to buy a box of disposeable latex gloves for your hands that the little bloodsuckers can't bite through. The system works flawlessly. The buzzing around the headnets takes some getting used to ----but it's WAY better than getting munched by every skeeter out there. We have photos with around 100 skeeters on our suits/headnets-----and one one bite------that's what I call AWESOME!!! Good luck , Jobu
