There are a few other threads related to this topic in the "Tackle and Equipment" section. Unfortunately majority have been hijacked by left-handed/right-handed casting/reeling arguments.

I believe the winner(s) of the burning contest was the team from Thorne Bros. One guy was using a Curado EJ and the other was using a TranX (I'm not sure which model). I wasn't at the show, and that's the most conclusive of an answer as I could some up from the video and reading other posts. I'm not really sure how the contest worked to be perfectly honest.

It looks big and heavy and I don't see an application for the higher geared unit in fresh water. However, I'm ready for something different so I'll try it with the lowered geared unit. I didn't get an opportunity to cast it so I can't speak with experience.

Does anyone have the results of the competition that they could post? I watched part of the video, but it was hard to tell how many casts/retrieves each person completed.

I watched the video. I felt one contestant took liberty with the rules. Was it a burning competition, or a fly-casting competition?

That competition proved NOTHING in regards to the reels. Wayyyy too many variables!

Just watch the Minnesota Muskie Episode of Hunt for Big Fish to see the reel get used and Jason Hammernick talk about the reel with his wrist problems. As for first hand look at the reel it is big and heavy but felt rock solid and was very nice like everything shimano makes. As for the price to each its own. If it is too expensive don't buy it. Most people don't have $60,000 + boats either.

I got to judge the "bucktail burning" contest.....50inchGrinch was right on. There were far too many variables (casts that did not count because they didnt reach the imaginary line, obstacles (diving boards) in the way, backlashes) to reach any conclusions. I could tell you from judging the contest that (Mike Hulbert had one) Shimano 400 TE LVJ burns bucktails more easily and faster IMO than the Tranx (retails for $450 so not much price difference). For me, I believe this is because of the smaller turning radius of the LJVs handle compared to that of a Tranx. To me the smaller turning radius is much more natural (even though the reel is geared at 5:0:1) it makes it easier to pull 10's faster than the large turning radius of the Tranx.
The Tranx is very big and heavy, but that being said is EXACTLY as avertised. It has great power and has the ability to burn double 10s with ease but I felt like I was winding a clock rather than reeling in a bait. This being said, I am different than your "average" musky fisherman. I am 25 years old, about 5'8" 165lbs and am in very good cardiovascular shape. Therefore, I prefer a smaller, lighter reel that I can palm (I have average sized hands). My friend who came with me to the Chicago show is 6'3" 290lbs and he picked up a Tranx and it fit in his huge "paws" like a low-profile bass reel fits in mine. In conclusion, I believe the Tranx is worth the $500 price tag if it fits exactly what you are looking for in a reel.

Didn't Hulbert win?
