The episope featuring the Tranx was on today and will be on again tonight at 7:30 pm EST on NBC Sports Network (Versus). Make sure to tune in or set the DVR or recorders. It was also a musky episode with Jason Hamernick.

Great show! Hopefully Larry or Billy can post the link where emails can be sent about fishing artificial only baits on Melton Hill. Lots of work, time, energy & monies have gone into this high potential fishery.

Its actually just artificials only on a 7 acre hotwater discharge plant cove named Bull Run Steamplant. In fact, we may just push to get it shut down to all fishing. Lots of muskies have been killed by people that aren't equipped to handle them. Lot of musky haters also go there to try and remove muskies from the lake. Send in your comments to [email protected] This would go a long way in helping preserve our fishery.

Not sure what happened here, guys. Sorry for getting everyone alerted for nothing. The program that aired this afternoon was the Tranx episode with Hamernick. I had the TN muskies only tonight here in PA. The TN episode was on last week in my area (both in the afternoon and evening airings), and I normally get only one episode type per week. We only get re-runs after all of the shows have aired. Not sure when the Tranx episode will be on again, but I'll be looking for it. Every show I've ever watched/recorded is the same from Sunday to Saturday. If it airs multiple times in a week, it's the same episode. Sorry again for the misinformation. I was disappointed as well.

Had the TN muskie show here in Michigan, but it was a good episode so I'm glad I watched it. Is the tranx episode an entire musky show with Hammernick?

I didn't get to see the middle, but the beginning and end were muskies. By the way they were talking at the end I'm sure it's all muskies. Glad there was at least some kind of musky show on for everyone to see.

He did all that last year. There was only one musky show. Musky shows aren't a dime-a-dozen in my area, so I look forward to every one. I have never fished, and I will never fish, in the Amazon or any other exotic place for exotic fish. I admit I'm narrow minded, but I don't care about those places or fish. Now, if he wants to mix it up and fish for catfish or pike or something that those of us in the continental US could actually fish for, go for it. I'll go along with some variety, but I live for musky episodes, not wolf fish.

Well said Larry! Actually, HFBF is by far my favorite fishing show on TV, no matter the location. I get even more excited when there shows featuring Muskie but enjoy every episode that I find myself recording the series and watching them multiple times. Keep up the amazing work Larry and us "Michiganders" love your show!!! My gosh Kid.... it's Dahlberg! Who cares where he's fishing, it's all exciting to see Larry drive the hooks home on any species! Larry just has some of the hardest hooksets I've ever seen!! Love it!!!

I like the fact that Larry is showing a sport I love. I am lucky enough to saltwater fish once in a while and got a 330lb grouper (not groper) and I went with a guide. I would think that most people would need to use a guide for big bad fish in saltwater so I would rather see musky fishing.

If Larry spends more time musky fishing then we could all learn from him. I really enjoyed the weighted line trick on the last show. Keep up the good work Larry and I think it is great that you are making progress protecting the muskies in TN.

LD:

Thanks for your support for the muskies in Melton Hill. I spend a couple of months down there in the winter and have seen some of the problems. I have the feeling that this lake has world record potential down the line, and needs lots of protection

The TWRA has some very good biologists who are working on the problem with the "Hot-Hole" during the winter. It would help if concerned folks wound send an e-mail to the site Billy listed. [email protected].

I wouldn't worry too much about the Kid! His problem is that he's caught too many big muskies fishing the "Big-V". To the rest of us these are "Big Fish"!

Been a long lime since we've spent any time in the boat together. In our old age we should do that again!

Thanks again!

Doug Johnson

Great to hear from you Doug. Speaking of old age, Billy tells me you're gonna retire down there. GOOD CALL!
Lots of beautiful country, amazing variety of water and lots of it, striking distance to the salt, some super musicians and lots of really fine folks. Kinda like the barbeque too.
As far as the kid, well, I honestly get a kick out of it although a battle of wits with an unarmed man always gets boring after the first volley.
As Billy may have told you I've corresponded with several really good guys in the agency and it looks really promising.
I totally agree with the size potentials there. I have a hunch that the reservoirs downstream from cold water discharge tail race fisheries have some very unique properties that should allow fast growth, large body mass and possibly greater longevity than other "southern" musky water.
Give me a shout some time, I'm always up for boat time with an old friend!
best

Just like his more off the beaten path shows.
Did not know his reason for doing this show or anything like that...just like the BIG FISH from other places one can't go to often.
Just my taste..should have kept fingers quiet.
That is it.
Then...tossing in some mental flavor to boot. Not to anyones liking..don't read it.
No intent on hurting anyone or rip him.

I loved the show...I like that he did his own thing to catch fish...that's cool...never miss a show. Love how he can drop baits along the bank of some exotic river 1/2 inch either side of snarly wood tangles...admirable accuracy! Its called 'Dahlberging' when a bait sails through a window amongst tree branches and then skips beneath an overhanging log splashing right next to shore in a really sweet looking spot. The world travels are great...love seeing the culture.

Tommy's cool, don't get rattled. Don't know him personally, although he did refuse my money once when I tried to hire him as a guide. AFter a few exchanges of emails he could tell I am somewhat of a technically-oriented, production-driven fisherman which he clearly is not. He's right, I need to slow down and smell the water a bit more sometimes. Yup, basically said you'd be better off with someone else...I respect the heck out of that. We all have something to learn if we just pay attention to each other.

Neat thread so far.

I like HFBF, but I especially like the muskie shows. Like someone else said I don't much care for fishing in Australia or the Amazon. Great shows, just not for me, and I generally flip around when they are on, whereas the muskie shows get multiple viewings. Keep making those musky shows Larry. I thought some of those fish out of Melton Hill were dandies anyways.

Tom I get it, you like the shows of him on our dream trips that we seldom to ever go on, or those off the beaten path shows, chasing fish that we do not see everyday. We sit and watch and only dream of making one of those dream trips, and yet Larry has had the opportunity to be on numberous of these adventures on yearly basis while we sat back and dream of being on those trips once in our lifetime. That was the excitement of the show you liked. Love wastching musky shows and gaining knowledge and truly enjoy them all, but the trip of chasing sail, tuna, shark and other exotics really to get my blood flowing.

No plans to at this point. To be honest, I don't have it totally tuned in yet from a couple of perspectives. As you may know, if you watch the show, I gave the molds to my friend Brad the new dad Hoppe and was hoping he'd make 'em so I didn't have to!
Towards perhaps a solution to your obvious end double wubble wish, making the most simple open back mold in the world, bending a couple of wires, and mix one little batch of goop, pour in in mold, dump in 2-4 oz number 9 lead shot, let harden. (appx ten minutes depending on size. Larger is faster)
Mike (aka Goop King) from Alumilite and I have been working on some processes that allow a person to eliminate the need for a lead melter, a compressor, airbrush, lathe, or any other tool you couldn't get in a Phone Booth in making professional looking lures.
That is one of them and it works great and so far has proven tough as nails and it can be done literally in minutes from start to finish on your kitchen table if you have a master!
If you understand the simple principle of head weight versus blade drag on the drop and how variations in blade size and shape affect how fast or slow the lure falls on slack line, then how fast you have to (or don't) move it to achieve a given depth or follow a contour or vertical feature it is often a tool that works when other stuff doesn't.
Tangling on the cast can be a problem if it isn't just right. Both on the arms and on the back hook. When just right it casts a country mile with very few tangles.
The problem is all the variables.
Maybe you can help figure it out!
The other option is to bend up some wire that been jammed through an egg sinker. Maybe capture it in a tube and crimp then stick in sinker . I'd use a rivet with the center punched out. The aluminum centered ones come out easily. Still a few months left of this very civil winter to tinker with it.
good luck!,
L

We have only met several times and enjoyed our conversations. I want to say THANK YOU for your years as an educator and innovator. And now a leader of a Grass Roots movement. It reminds of the late 80's when a group of MN fisherman petitioned the MNR to make Lac Suel a catch and release fishery.

Many people aren't aware of your early years as a lure designer and member of In-Fisherman. As a boy (I am now in my mid-Forties) I remember you going to remote places with the InFish staff in search of Big Muskies and Pike. The reality is I wanted to muskie fish after watching an epidode of you (and I believe Don Pursch or Jim Linder) on what I remember to be Rowan Lake. Correct me if I am wrong.

I can only imagine what the years of traveling the globe does to ones body (and probably intestinal tract), and family life. I think its great you are going back to your roots.

I am hoping you have a chance to reconnect with Doug. My cabin is right across from his and perhaps we can have a bump together. You would be welcome more than at one of my shore lunches that I do throughout the season on LOTW.

Thanks for everything, I would have never gone down the Muskie path, sometimes I wish I hadn't.

Best reagrds,

Dan Klis

The striper show filmed in TN was on this afternoon. Hopefully I'll get to see/record the Tranx/musky episode tonight. Anyone have any info of what is expected this evening?

The Striper show that was on this afternoon will be on again tonight according to my guide on DirectTV. "Minnesota Muskies" is shown on my guide to run again on Thursday the 19th of January on DirectTV channel 603 NBCSHD. Keep up the great work, Larry.

Tommy, you rock. Larry, so do you. You critical (insert insult) who know or care little for the culture that is the real deal in Muskie fishing off the beaten concrete and steel pathways....well. you need to watch Larry's show and read Tommy's posts.

The Kid Rules. Most of you would cut off a finger to live like he does. And he's a heck of alot closer to his Creator than most of you will ever be.

'Keep on rocken'...

Good advice.

I like both the musky shows and the exotic ones. My wife will watch the exotic locations with me and she don't fish just likes to see the places HFBF goes. If it's a musky HFBF she has no interest, if that's worth anything.

You know what I would love to see? I'd love to see guys like Herbie, Doug Johnson, Pearson, Sandy, and the likes get on here and post a few things under some anonymous name that only I knew what it was, just so I could read the replies from folks who have no idea who they are taking to. You can keep your glee and dancing with the stars and TV crap... I'd pay money for that kind of enetrtainment!!!
