Ok, fellow musky hunters, I could use some additional brain power here. I was up north fishing the St. Germain tournament this weekend. Even though my lake was turning (Big Arb) and we got whacked in the skull by a strong cold front, I stilled managed to move 7 fish. Had two take a swing at my fav reef hawg, only to miss and vanish into the depths.

Here is my question: Have any of you had reef hawgs that these fish continue to miss? Had a 48"er two weeks ago up north do the same thing. Either they strike low (under the bait) over they just roll right over the top of it. Is there anything I can do to get these fish to play nice? Thanks, any help would be great!

Howdy,

Sounds like you at least had a bit of action over the weekend. My only fish of the weekend came on a reef hawg after it mossed the first time.

Though I don't have any Hawgs that fish miss regularily, I have time periods where Hawgs are the only thing a fish will show on, but they seem to pull up at the last second, and either roll over them, or mouth them and let go so quickly I can't catch up(this does happen quite a bit). About the only thing that I've found to work is to extend the pause longer if the fish seem to be missing it completely, or working it a bit quicker if fish seem to be purposely missing it, or mouthing the lure for a split second. I've alos noticed that sometimes a bump-n-rise lure like a bobbie or suick might get these type of critters exhibiting the "Reef Hawg miss".

I had between 25-30 fish in Canada this year do just what you are saying, and switching from the 8" to the 6" didn't help. Usually a totally different retrieve speed, or different lure did it(often a bump and rise or small twitcher). Otherwise coming back at a different time helped.

This past weekend I had a nice fish miss my 8" and I casted back three times with nothing. My girlfriend cast her favorite crane over there and a Walleye in the 28-30" range smoked it and was lost near the boat.
