Does anyone tie there own fluorocarbon leaders I understand tied ones are less likely to break than the crimped ones. I need some 36" ones for when I troll and ten bucks a piece seems quite expensive. Thought I could make my own and save a few dollars. If you could post up how its done and what the tricks are it would be very helpful.

Check out this page - it is the one I use. I add a small amount of super glue or 5 minute epoxy to it. Never had a failure.

Just make sure you get the length right before you tighten, cause once you do it's not coming apart.

A properly crimped leader will not break!!!!! Saltwater guys targeting 300lb tuna and 1000 lb Marlin crimp their fluorocarbon leaders. double barrel crimps and the proper crimp tool is all you need.

I agree crimps are fine. I think early on people had issues with thinner diameter/lighter poundage with getting a consistant crimp. But once they went to a 130# or larger there seemed to be less issues. You can 'mushroom' the tag end and that also helps with keeping the leader from pulling free of the crimp.

food for thought on crimps coming from a knowledgeable angler, lure/rod builder, reel mechanic all around fishing guru friend of mine who has done his own lab testing: remember that flouro can and does stretch. when it does the diameter of the line decreases. As a result the line ultimately can reach a diameter smaller than the inside diameter of the finished crimp allowing for the flouro to slip through the crimp to the point of overall failure. the crimp may not necessarily pinch or nick the flouro detrimentally as some may claim but yet the leader as a whole will fail. knots on the other hand fail far less frequently under the same or greater loads assuming the knot is properly and neatly tied.

Same as Landry I add a dab of 3M contact adhesive but I tie with a Perfection Loop.

When you can put 100 pounds of force on a muskie let me know! a whole lot of shtuff is gonna break before my leaders ever do:

I have used my own crimped leaders for the last 8 years, in this time I have broke two rods on fish, sadly once even broke 80 lb braid line on a fish (sounded like a rifle going off) by stupidly trying to keep a large fish from jumping boatside, by locking down the spool with my thumb. Probably lost two or three mag dawgs with line breaks due to backlashes, have had a hook or two bend enough to lose fish.....but one thing that I can honestly say that has never failed is a crimped leader. Just my experience.

I have done some "garage" testing at work with a chain hoist and the leader failed 10/10 times, not due to a failure from crimping. They all broke in the end of the loop. I will continue to crimp my leaders until it is easier to tie knots with 135 lb fluoro :).

5 minute epoxy and a 3 twist uni on 13-150 no problem.... no failures

Should probably check your line....should never lose lures to backlashes.
