My almost 6 year old had his first musky follow this weekend. It was his first time using a full sized musky outfit. He wanted to try out a lure that daddy made. After pinching his finger between the line guide and the side of the reel, and 10 minutes of “balling” on the lake, he said, “I’m not afraid” and tried it again. He made the first and second casts OK; they went out about 20 feet. So I then go to the back of the boat to grab another rig. All of a sudden my boy calmly says, “There’s a fish” I look up and see a twenty pounder’s nose right on the tail of the crankbait he was barley bringing in – good thing it was suspending. I then notice the 400 bucks with a tight drag he’s holding in his hands. He had one hand on the crank and the other behind the reel, Uh oh. I quickly made my way back to the front when the fish and lure became boat side. I told my son we need to figure 8 him. I grabbed the rod and demonstrated his first figure 8. We watched as the fish rose up again, made a final turn on the bait, and slowly glided away. He was exited, but not nearly as much as I was happy and proud. I feel bad giving the kid musky fever right before winter like that.[] [:praise:]

My kids love to musky fish, it's great to take them out on the water. last year, my oldest(7 at the time) had a nice fish up to the boat. this year he had one grab his spinnerbait boatside and miss. My middle son who is 6, caught his first musky this year and had one on a topraider that jumped off. My youngest son who is 5, had a nice fish break him off, at least he got to see it and fight it for awhile. They are hooked. They only want to cast and not with their poles, musky poles. My 6 year old is a topwater nut. My 8 year old is casting baitcasters, he loves it. My 5 year old is a fishing machine, no breaks he just goes and goes.

Sounds like you have a fishing partner for life!! congrats
My little man isn't quite 2 yet but he loves to fishing. He got too close to the edge of the boat on Labor day weekend and fell in. We were still in the harbor and he didn't have his life jacket on yet. I quickly grabbed his arm and yanked him back into the boat and tried to calm him down. He stopped crying fairly soon until he saw his "rod" floating in the harbor and then the water works started all over again. He cried until we retreived the rod and was right back to the edge of the boat "casting"

Can't wait till he gets a couple of years older!!!!

Congrats on the Father-n-Son fishing. My son started going fishing with me when he was about 2-1/2 or 3. Caught his first musky with me before he was 6 and has been hooked ever since. He's married with a family of his own and living in Ohio these days so we don't get to fish together as much as we once did, but we always find time for an outing or two each year and I revisit those "past" trips of long ago in my mind on a fairly regular basis. They're almost as much fun all these years later as they were at the time. I'm sure thankful that I took the time to take him (and his brother) with me when they were just boys. I heartily recommend it to all who have the opportunity. Father/daughter outings highly recommended too....[;)]
