| Is this still the go to rod for pounders? | |

| I threw 3 different rods for big rubber this Fall. The TI 9' full cork, a 9'6" Predator XH and the 9' Calstar. All 3 were great, but I personally liked the Calstar the best. Perhaps a bit physically heavier than the others, but a couple ounces doesn't really matter when casting baits that weigh a pound or more. The softer tip(glass blending to graphite) really allows the rod to load. I also liked the slightly softer action for working the baits as well. Not as pronounced movement....kinda slower. IMO, the real advantage of the Calstars softer action is keeping the fish pinned. The fish get absolutely no slack line to throw the bait and with big rubber, this can be an issue. No problem driving 9/0's home either although I think a combination of rod action, super sharp hooks/weight of the bait and the fish actually hook themselves. Stupid fish. I've posted about these rods before and still believe they are one of the most versatile rods available. Great for trolling and an incredible sucker rod too. I have to say that the other rods were great too and I'd have no problem throwing either one all Fall, but given the choice....Calstar. The best kept secret in muskie rods.Reels? Above freezing-400TE w/ Power Handle....below freezing-Trinny 14(no icing/levelwind issues) and I can palm both,no gloves. The fish below ate a Monster Medussa after 3 minutes of 8's /ovals. The rod performed flawlessly during the "8", allowing me to use speed without loading, both in the straightaways and depth changes and more importantly, speed DURING the depth changes. My personal best ....on the Calstar. Give Frankie a call to discuss options....630-309-8055.
