Hey boys,
I know some of you guys are messing with the hooks on the 9" grannies. Which hooks are holding well for you? I'm having some problems keeping the larger specimens hooked on these baits, and knowing that it can't possibly be me stinking at hooking the fish, I'm blaming it on the stock hooks.

What hooks are you playing with on these puppies that aren't going to tangle up on me? I'm not sure I can go up to the 5/0 eagle claws or mustads as I think they may be locking up all the time, but I'm open for suggestions as I'm sick of losing big fish on these things.

How about Mustad 3/0 ringed, round bend, x-strong treble hooks (35656BR)?

I just received some Tyrant hooks from R&H. Very short shanks compared to other brands I've used.

I've never had problems keeping fish stuck on a Grandma with stock hooks casting or trolling. Since you didn't mention the situation, I'll share where I've had problems with other baits. As with any big lipped bait, I could see there could be problems in a casting situation with a pause-rip. This comes from the fish getting the whole head and lip of the bait in their mouth. Once you have that big lip in their mouth, getting the front hook to bite a good chunk of flesh can be tough. You could try upsizing just the front hook and adding heatshrink so it can't tangle with the middle hook - this has helped me with other baits.

Hey guys, thanks for the input. Just seems like the bigger fish are shaking the hooks pretty quick for the most part. It's always when twitch'n the bait, but not working it overly agressive (not trolling though). I just put some mustad 3/0 round bends on it to see if that helps, but I may upsize the front hook and shrink tube it like you mention Will as even the 3/0 short shanks look like they can tangle. Hopefully this helps this fall as I'm 0-1 this week on big girls eating that bait (don't want that number to get any worse then that) :).

Thanks again!

I'll be watching this post very closely because I have the same problem as Tuffy1.
So I went to 3/0 ST-36BC Owner, it's a lighter hook and it changed the action of the lure to much for me. Now I'm experimenting with a Eagle Claw 774 - size 4/0 hook. It has a longer shank and maybe just getting the hook away from the body of the lure will give the the hook more clearance to do it's job. I also eliminated the middle hook completely, the same 4/0 hook was put on the rear. Still to soon to give any good feedback that will have to wait till next year. Sure hoping for a better hooking percentage while twitching. I had to try something different.

Very nice post Tuffy1 - Kudos to you!
