Location: northern indiana | So, of all the pics and poses that you see, what are your favorites??? Me personally, the pictures I enjoy seeing the most, are those of the fish being released. Maybe that's why I get so excited when I see a 50"+ beast behind my bait working it's way to the boat. Atleast I know they're in there. |

| I like the unexpected moment picture. Bad picture, head crop off, fish shaking when held etc. It's not perfect but it say a thousands words. |

| Angles angles angles. If I've got the camera, I'm constantly taking pictures when someone boats one. Often, my favorites are when the guy thinks the photos are over and turns slightly to put the fish in the water. A broadside shot of a fish is OK and definitely has its place, but the ones that really capture your eye are ones that show the width of a fish's head or back (lots of Jerry Sondag's photos do a good job of this). Those are the ones that make you say WHOA aloud. Over the shoulder release shots are neat (I like the above one), but the famous Jack Burns release shots take the cake, IMO. A nice touch is when the person is looking at the fish vs. looking directly at the camera; sort of gives a sense of reverence and respect to the fish (see above release shot). Fill the frame and zoom with your feet if necessary. Action shots (hook sets, a rod doubled over while fighting a fish, a fish jumping, a fish following, etc.) are rare when muskie fishing and their elusiveness alone makes them supremely more interesting than a grip-and-grin shot.
BTW, the above release shot is excellent. Without pixel peeping it appears tack sharp, has no background distractions, the eye is naturally led to the muskies eye and then to the angler, great lighting. Nice work. |

Location: Not far enough north! | Here's another one I found. That fish bit the crap out of my left hand on the first day of the trip. Too far to go back to states to get stitches so had to superglue it for the entire week. She was 47" of pure hell and I will remember forever because of the scars on my hand... This picture kinda sums up her attitude!

I'm not sure if the fish are getting meaner or I'm just getting careless, but I've had to restock the boat's first-aid kit twice this year. My wife says she doesn't need to ask how many fish we caught. All she needs to do is count the band-aids on my hands. |

QUOTE]
She was mean but here's exactly how it went. Got to lake of the woods, got to camp and checked in, headed out on first spot. Half way around the first little island she came from underneath on the first turn of the eight and ate the bait. Netted then measured just like normal. Cameras out and my cousin says " You want the gloves?" I say "Nah, I'm Good" Well slid my right hand into gills and started to lift and she thrashed and tried to swallow my left hand. I pulled hand out and up and put other hand on my palm as fast as I could and my cousin goes " Man that's a good one huh?" I said "yep needs seven stitches or so". ( I'm an expert on stitches by the way ) So we cleaned it up with alcohol swabs and wrapped with gauze then I put the gloves on and took the pics. We fished until dinner and then after dinner found some superglue performed a little surgery with nail clippers and sharp pocket knife to clean up the edges and glued. It busted open on every hookset the rest of the week so I would have to re-glue it but I got lucky and it never got infected. So while it was sore all week it never really hurt too bad. Healed up surprisingly well.
This year we took a stitches kit, and a couple bottles of superglue and no one in the group even got a scratch. And I wore gloves on every fish...

That is a real bummer about getting your hand cut like that. It sure makes one stop and think about how easily one can get cut handling a big Pike or Muskie.
I had used a fish cleaning glove for years with no trouble, but this year those little holes in the metal fabric cost me. The cuts weren't long and didn't need stitches, but gosh those teeth could cut in deep and it took a long time to heal up. I switched to a Lindy glove and haven't had any more problems. I miss the feel from the cleaning gloves, but I don't miss bleeding.
Good fishing. |
