Official Cass Lake Report!!

Cass Lake was the destination for 30 anglers Mr. Cady signed up for the MuskieFIRST Fall Monster Outing last week.

The weather was cool and Fall like, with a few days each cloudy, sunny, and rainy. We fished in wind, flat calm, and everything in-between!

The resort, Break on the Lake, was absolutely TOP SHELF. Everyone ate like Kings as the cabins took turns cooking, and libations were definitely part of the many opportunities presented.

Fishing on Cass is a true adventure. The lake has big big big muskies, great Pike, and big Walleyes. Panfish are everywhere, and the quality is very good. Everyone shared information, putting the group on the pattern quickly. Jason Smith ws the Walleye Master, putting a couple slobs in the boat on jerk baits.

Muskies were plentiful, but difficult. The reed bite was on, but lasted only a few minutes during the early morning on the sunny days. The breaklines produced a number of fish, including the heaviest of the trip; Mark H's tail less pig. While taking the bait out of the net ( it was already out of the fish), the fish thrashed and impaled Mark with a Phantom treble, ALL the way to the bend. He was a bit unhappy and howled like a siren at first, but insisted on cutting the hook and getting the fish CPR'd safely. The emergency room was wild, so we spent about 3 1/2 hours waiting for the doc to get his hand de-hooked. At 10:30 (PM!) dinner was waitng for us; thanks to Ranger, Treats, Al, and the others!! Salmon on the grill, and steaks, too.

There was lots of boat hopping, so many of the anglers made new friends at the outing. I personally had GREAT time. Mark H was a gas to fish with, and everyone was friendly, generous, and willing to share info so we all could get on fish. Jason had a couple meetings for that purpose, looking over Cass maps. Shady led trips off Cass to other waters in the area, with several fish caught as a result. Al took a video you will all be interested to see. I will do my best to get that done as soon as I get the disc from him!

Here is the Muskie List:
Jason Smith, 48.25 and 29
Mikes Extreme ( great guy to share a cabin with, and a heck of a good stick)43.5- 46.5- 33 -28
Duck 42
Steve Worrall 38
Treats ( GREAT guy to talk with about fishing!) 37-36
Dave J 40 (this guy lives to fish!)
Esox Maniac 44 (YES!!!)
Mark H 44.5 WITHOUT A TAIL!!! This was a clean 49 with the tail, but something had happened to the fish, and it literally had NO tail. Fought like mad, though, and payback for Mark was a B!!)
Shady 44
Born to Fish 39

I saw a PIG,( missed a reef hawg, clean) Mark saw at least one in the 50" class, and reports of big fish looking but not eating came from most boats. Pike were plentiful, and several were made into dinner in our cabin. Mark S was a great cook, the fish was terrific!

The outing was a blast. We all decided we will go back next year, for sure. I will be setting up the Fall and Spring outings with Jason for next year, information to follow as soon as it is available. Thanks go to Break on the Lake, Steve Cady, and EVERYONE who attended.

Mark H's Fatty. Note the tail is gone from the fork forward. I measured a fish close to that size, and found that the missing part of the tail would be about 4".

Hi Mr Worrall,
Thanks for your insights this week too!
I ended up trading for the Suick lure you customized for Treats. For everyone else who likes Suick, Mr Worrall got a tip on making a Suick wobble more wildly, from Bob Suick himself.
Twist the tail to almost 45 degrees on one side only. We worked the bait the next day, adjusting the eye to allow it to swim straight. No strikes, but that's now my favorite Suick 9inch weighted. The most important thing about throwing a Suick is: You gotta beleive.

BTW for future reference a horseshoe should be worn with the prongs up! (Man, that was cold!)

Later,
papa joe

Wow! What a great outing!

Steve W/ or whoever is outing master for next year, put me on the list for Cass Lake next year.

My trip started sour when my stepson had to cancel out because of work. Then I got there & the boat had no power (pin hole in primer bulb) into Cass lake for new bulb (3 hours of lost fishing time.) Next the $#%@#& running lights are not working. Pull fuse holder cap & fuse is crushed inside the holder??( (Aligator clip wire to the rescue. Then the trolling motor switch stuck full on! (Impossible to control the Esox Maniac on the breaks & wind blown points. (4 more hours of lost fishing time) Then start to go out- hit full power & it doesn't sound right, like it's not opening up. Pull throttle back & then forward same thing. Pull it back & motor keeps roaring- no F%^$&*(&* throttle control- wide open. Pull the kill switch and take it back to the dock with the repaired trolling motor- whole *&^%# day wasted. Decide enough is enough. Tie Esox Maniac to the dock for the duration. All kinds of offers to ride in other boats. Jumped in Ranger's (Rick) fishing machine & proceeded to turn the trip around. I had a great time with Rick, we were also in same cabin. Buck lake finally gave one up for me (44"). My first fish since 1997. Ranger did a absolute great job on the net. She came out from under a dock on the south shore of Buck. Wind blown fast sand break. Smacked a 8" Jake (Stan Durst Stump Knocker). Fight was quick and sweet (less than 2 minutes), thanks to Ranger's excellent net work. Barbless hooks came out clean (front & middle)Fish was green- but I managed to subdue her & not drop her. Almost did the in the water release pic with the fish- me in the water. Put her in the water belly up-she was calm, rolled her over & she instantly threw what seemed like 5 gallons of water on me. I moved 4 other fish on this same lure. One was an absolutely bone jarring strike-but no hooks. I would recommend any serious muskie fisherman or even the not so serious to try a MF outing. This was a excellent trip, I met a great bunch of muskie fisherman. My cabin was Papa Joe, Ranger, Fish On, Unfortunate One. PapaJoe's a hoot. As is Jon Boorom (Phish Killer's) fishing partner. jon doesn't own a computer, if he did he would have everyone in stitches. Thanks to Steve Cady for putting it together. Hat's off to the pro's they shared a lot of good information.

It's hard to type, hand arms, elbows & shoulders are telling me I'm not a spring rooster any more. But I wish I were still out there. Here's a picture of my 44.

My hat is off to M1 on the Cass Lake trip. Had a great time and put some quality time on the water. I wasn't lucky enough to stick hooks into any spots but did boat several northerns. Fished a day with Jason and learned a ton. Thanks again J. Looking forward to next years trip.
Keep up the good work guys.

Work had me humping all week so didnt make it down until late fri nite. Shady took me out on saturday and put me on the biggest fish I have ever seen. Mid 50's for sure, there are some pig's in those waters!!!!!
Sunday morning, awoke at 9:00 Am, missed my ride with Treats and PapaJoe, so headed home. It was a very short weekend, but would do it again in a heartbeat. I had a chance to put a lot more faces to board names and chat with some fellow musky nuts. It sounds like everyone had a great time and would do it again. I will, just hope I can put in more days there next year.

Here's Steve Worrall & Mark H. with a dying 47" fish Steve spotted by our dock. The fish has obviously been de-slimed via miss handling, i.e., dropped in the boat or laid on the carpet. The fish has lost ~ 60% of it's scales and external skin to fungal infection. Like us, if you lose 60% of your skin you just might die. This is a very strong argument for in water release. Do we really need the measurements to be 47 1/4"? What comes first your pride or the fish?? After this trip, I'll probably never bring another fish into the boat. EEExcept when I break the NWR![] I also have a short video clip of this fish- Steve you have mail.

I did the same thing 2 weeks before. I popped a 24"er on an Undertaker in about 8' of water. I'll be taking some walleye gear next year after I bumped into a guy in the fish cleaning house who had 10 walleyes to filet...all 18 and 19". He said he had a good morning that day. He and his son caught 40 before they ran out of crawlers.
I'm booked for the 6th-20th of Sept next year, so I'll be warming them up for you guys again.

Cass was a blast. I want to thank everyone that gave me a day fishing with them. I learned something from each and every person I fished with in the trip. I had the opportunity to fish with Jason 2 full days on Cass and he always puts his partners on fish...boat control perfected. Muskie Treats also put us on good water and I was happy netting his nice muskie. Mike about knocked me out of the boat on a couple of hooksets and I am sure he will cause a few sore mouths in the future. And even though the fishing was slow with Ranger I still had a great time.
It was great meeting all of you. Al, Paul, Ranger, and Papa joe...I am glad I was in your cabin and spent the week with such a diverse, good set of people. See you at future outings (hopefully I will have a good rig then!).

Al gets burned by old PapaJoe habit....
So upon leaving the Cass Lake outing, I was unaware that I had a passenger in the form of a large sucker in a shopping bag underneath the passenger seat of my car.
As a used-to-be car dealership owner, I have learned over the years the value of a car wash, and especially when there's lots of sand from the dirt roads up in Cass Lake, I will hit a car wash whenever I see one.
So at Clear Lake, the car wash attendant comes up to me, shows me a sucker very much similar to the one Al was showing around, asks if I want to keep it!
So, Al, I guess you'll burn me next time. But payback's a bitch, esp for a guy who tends to fall asleep on the couch most nights...

Have a groovy day,
papajoe
