Well today was not a good day for me. After fishing lake waconia for 5 hours and getting skunked I headed home with my tail between my legs. After I backed into my driveway I got out of my car to lower my motor so I could enter the garage only to smell something burning. After some inspection I found that my bearings in my left rear tire were smoking. I spent most of the day taking it apart and trying to get the nut pried off of the axel. Finally with a lot of work and effort I accomplish the task only to find my bearings fused to the axel as well.

So......I have my boat in my driveway and can't drive it to a repair shop because I am missing a tire and the trailer lowers to the pavement when not on a jack. I am thinking that I may be able to find someone who has a cutting torch to take these off, but I may need to fix the threads as they were damaged as well. I am no expert at this by any means.

Does anyone know of someone who can help or does this type of work who would be willing to make a house call? This site has been great for getting information and I am in major need of help right now. Please let me know if you have any advice/suggestions/contacts et.... I will be back racking my brain on this in the a.m -
By the way I have a Tuiffy 1890 with a tandem axel "Tuff" trailer by trailmaster.

Sonds like your looking at a new axel and bearings find a dealer,or repair place that will come out to your place they will put your trialer up on blocks, Go with the new oil cooled bearings and a heaver axel. your lucky you made it home with the rig. Good luck *I see you have a tandem axel that will have more parts to check out. Marv.

Tony- Can you post photo's of the axle- close up of the bearing race and the damaged threads.

You might be able to crack the race with a cold chisel and get it off. But you also need to wear some eye protection and gloves if you try that. A little filing may fix the thread issue. However, given your discription its probably better to get some local help. Any automotive mechanic can probably fix it or tell you what level of damage you are looking at...... Where do you live?

Good luck,

I've dealt with a few ceased bearings on vehicles and trailers before. The best luck i had with removing them with taking a grinder and notching grooves on the top of the bearing race and using a chisel to smack them and try to spin them off. It sounds like you may need to look into a new axle.

You should not have to replace the axle unless you really buggered the threads "prying" the nut off or bent the spindle in the process. The others guys are right these bearings are pretty hard steel and most of the time can be split with a grinder and a chisel. I usually do more damage on the spindle with a torch than a grinder when removing bearings. However dont worry too much about little dents or scratches on the spindle as long as you can get the rear seal and races on correctly. The bearings ride on the races not the spindle.
How about the race and the bearing inside the rim? Have you been able to get those out? Is the inside race the only thing left on the spindle?
Take your time watch your fingers... I agree Put up a picture so we can see it

Change them all NOW While you are at it!

T is PM'd you another site, but do be careful of the spindle. i'm going on two weeks now without my boat because of a similar malfunction, but my spindle was long gone by the time i because aware of it. in my experience you got some pretty good advice here already on getting the old rings off, just be careful of that spindle.

The trailer is not a tandem?

Some good advice here. If you have a dremel tool, you can literally cut the old race to the spindle without touching the spindle and drive it off with a chisel. That axle has flow through lubing, so make sure the zerk is not damaged by putting a bit of grease through it when the bearings are removed.

Try calling Mike at Simply Fishing Marine if you need further assistance, he should be able to help.
