Location: VA | Get the regular size Medussa and a 10" slammer minnow.
For topwater look at lowriders and topraiders.
And ever one needs a hellhound and a Mag.Dawg
Good Colors would be black, firetiger, perch and black w/ orange tail. Good Luck

I don't have a rod that handles double 10s either. I have one and an Eagle Tail, but can't throw them comfortably. Be realistic. There are fish that would duck away from a double 10 or Eagle Tail that are worth catching. My rods are rated 15-30 lbs, and 14-40 lbs. and are only 6'6" long. For the time being I don't need anything else and am too cheap (or wise) to spend more money.
Suggestions: Bucktails: Mepps Magnum Musky Killer with tandem tail for summer, single tail for early on. Mepps Giant Killer with tandem tail for summer, signle tail for early in the season. Regular Mepps Musky Killer with single tail for spring.
Crankbaits: Shallow, 5.5" and 6.5" Wileys. (Look at the track record.) 6" Jake with size 1 treble hooks. 6" Grandma. 7.5" Grandma.
Deeper: 6", 7", 8" Believer. Easy as pie to use, and has two line attachment eyes.
Wouldn't be without these, and cost is reasonable.
Deep: Regular Depthraider and Jointed Depthraider, 6" and 8".
Of course there are lots and lots more.
Some realistic suggestions |

| Since you are new to muskies I would suggest keeping it simple. Start out with a few bucktails like bucher 700's or super vibrax's, a couple topwaters like topraiders or you mentioned a pacemaker, standard size bulldawgs or curlysues, a couple cranks like shallowraiders and depthraiders, and throw in a jerkbait or two for good measure. In most cases color is a matter of personal preferance so get the colors you like and will throw. Learn to use these basics and use them well. The fish will come, and when that happens look out . You will want every new thing that comes along. Good luck! |

Location: NorthCentral WI | IMO some good beginner lures are:
Bucher Topraider - Most consistent topwater in all conditions
Buchertail 700 - Orange/Black - Quality small size bucktail, I prefer over Mepps
Regular Bulldawg or Mini Medussa - If you don't have the rod to throw Mag Dawgs, these smaller versions still catch fish
Musky Innovations Shallow Invader - Easy to use shallow crank that catches fish |

Location: Sycamore, IL | I fish those lakes as well and have done best on spinner baits and twitchbaits in bright colors. If I was to only have 3 lures for S.IL lakes they would be: Nutbuster willow leaf spinner bait, 8" believer and a 7" slammer minnow...throw in a bright orange rattle trap and your good to go! Hope this helps...

Location: Ohio | If the lakes you are going to fish have shad I would pick up some shad style crank for trolling. Tuff shads, monster shad. etc.. |

Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | Being new to the game, I would first tie up with some locals that fish musky ask them what baits work for them. Then look at the water column start at the top, a walk the dog, and a prop bait of some kind, then move down the water column based on your fishing. If you are a bank runner you do not need 30' cranks for trolling. etc...Simple is better at the start. I always say you need enough lures to keep your head in the game during the down times. More than that and you are most likely confusing the issue. I fished 3 years with an oldtimer that had 6 baits in his bucket and to his name. He caught fish. Not that 6 is the number just that you will in time have tooo many baits regardless, enjoy this time by keeping it simple. |
