Location: Hayward, WI | I will be heading to Vilas county for the first time from September 10-13. I live and fish in WI but have never fished Vilas. I am pretty sure we will be staying at Skyview Resort in Presqu Isle.
There are so many lakes in the area I'm not sure were to start. I'm sure the lodge will have some suggestions too, but I thought I would put a thread up here to see if I could get some tidbits from anybody.
Certainly not looking for any secrets or GPS coordinates. I'm pretty familiar with fishing medium clarity to clear waters in the 1,000 acre range. There seem to be several similar options in the PI area. I'm also flexible though, I have experience on flowages and do a little dabbling on the bigger, clear deep water lakes also.
My wife will be coming along in search of her first musky, so it would be nice if she had a shot at one. We still aren't looking for numbers water where the fish top out at 34 inches though. Looking for a place to catch some average fish with a chance at something big.
Thanks!

Location: North/Central WI | The Musky Classic is that weekend...takes place on pretty much all the popular musky waters in PI, Winchester, Boulder Junction, and the Manitowish Chain. There will be lots of pressure on all the lakes up there. It would be possible to fish around the tourney hours. Night fishing may be your best option that time of year anyway (depending on weather). I think the tourney hours are 12pm-7pm Fri, 7am - 7pm Sat, 7am-11am Sun. I'll PM you a couple other area lakes that the tournament is not held on that you may want to check out. |

| I don't know how far away you would be, but Wildcat in Boulder Junction is a good action lake and easy to fish. Probably won't find many fish 45 inches or larger in size, but there are plenty of 34's to 40's to keep you entertained. PM me if you'd like to know a few spots. Nice thing about this lake is that you can fish it in 3 hours and know what is going on.
Ballard would be another nice little action lake to look at. |

| Find out when Adam (the owner) will be around and chat him up, or possibly send him an e-mail and let him know you are staying at his place and need some fishing info. The time I met him (on a snowmobile trip) he mentioned that he LOVED musky fishing above darn near all things and seemed happy to talk about fishing with the guests.
The bar and food are excellent at Skyview. Great place to relax after a day on the water! |
