Subject: new gps = why no icons?

was looking to upgrade my boat electronics and found that the new gps's no longer have icons...any idea why?

This is probaly one of the most used features i have, and i cannot understand why they have dumped this feature...now i'm not sure what to do.

do they have a simpler way to manage waypoints?

i used to drive around and icon weed pockets, or where i had a fish follow, then if i found and particular hot spot i would save it as a waypoint. then at the end of the year i would erase all of the icons and start over.

am i the only one to find this as a useful feature?

They are just called waypoints. Works just the same as the old ones. All kinds of different symbols can be dropped, just as you're used to. Get an HDS you will love it.

I miss the icons to hopefully someday Lowrance will bring them back in a future upgrade for the HDS...

If they bring icons back, I would like more that are related to fishing. Perhaps several of the major species most people fish for. Bass, walleye, etc..

Having talked with Lowrance technicians numerous times in regards to the icon feature that was available on pre-HDS units such as the most recent LCX line, there is no immediate plans to bring icons back.

The reasoning they did away with icons is because the US Coast Guard does not recognize icons as a navigable icon and does provide the necessary information that a waypoint does according to Lowrance.

I have the HDS system. In the waypoint menu I just turn off the number and use an symbol of my choice, ie rocks, weeds, fish, treasure chest with no numbers. (this looks just like icons on my old set up) If I remember correctly the LCX units would store 2000 icons and 2000 waypoints. With the new HDS units I get 8000 waypoints which essentially doubles my ability to mark up structure. My routes are marked up with hearts, weeds, and rocks with no number and other structure with numbers and names.

I know that doesn't directly answer your question, but it works great for me as by doing this I have what appears as icons and what appears as waypoints.

That's exactly what the Lowrance Techs told me to do if I was looking to use a waypoint like an icon.

HDS waypoint storage is 5000, LCX units were 1000 waypoints and 1000 icons.

Here is an example of a waypoint as an Icon. The hearts are placed over the heaviest weed beds. Notice no number attached. I use the heart waypoint with the number off as an icon.
