My 20 amp fuse on my 60hp tracker mercury outboard keeps blowing. The outboard runs but when I stop the fuse has blown and I have to replace it. I put a new ignition switch in but that did not solve the issue. However the fuse does not blow when I put the water muffs on and run it in driveway. I tested the volt output from battery to engine that was fine. I also tested all the circuits from the battery to the dash for continuity and resistance no luck.

I am stumped please help

Hi,

Couple ideas would be to run the motor on the muffs and move it up and down with the tilt and trim and side to side to try to replicate the fuse blowing, my guess is you have a power wire that is rubbed through somewhere and it is shorting out somewhere near the motor. wiggle wires near the battery connection could be a loose one arcing. good luck these gremlins are tough.

I would agree that you are shorting to ground through the lower unit grounding to the water, check all wiring for wear that is close to any of the outboard castings.

Could be the stator. Can call a dealer to get the resistance specs. If that tests good, could be regulator rectifier or CDI.
