I've always fished specifically for pure strains but this week I'm fishing a lake that is strictly tigers. My question is, how do your tactics vary from pures to tigers? Do you downsize because tigers tend to grow at a slower rate? I've also heard a rumor that tigers rarely follow, any truth to this?

large bass sized spinnerbait is all you need for metro tigers. no, they don't follow much.

They don't follow? They follow in the lakes I fish, every day I see fish following. We do downsize, bass sized lures or slightly larger.

I've seen them caught on all kinds of bass tackle on lakes in Mich. The biggest I personally know of -- 49 inches -- came on a mag red-and-white Tadpolly with custom yellow dots. Smaller than a size 9 Shad Rap.

If I was going after Tigers I would try loading the bases in the late innings then lean into a pitch, but that's just me.

Acually they grow faster than pure strain and have a much shorter life span and yes they do follow I dont know were you heard that they are acually more aggressive than pure strain and for the metro use bass spinners or showgirls work well my best tiger lure is a white buzz bait its awesome when they hit them so hard what lake are you hitting I might be able to give you some spots to try.

i think they're more aggressive than pures, they're suckers for shiny flashy things just like pike are. think pike when you're fishing them more than muskies and you'll do ok.

i do see them follow sometimes but they usually don't stick around long

Try casting into 1-3 ft of water. From what I have seen, they like to cruise in very shallow water between the shore and thick weeds like milfoil. They often return to the same spot 20 min later if you can't get them the first time around. And yes they do follow, but I have yet to see a lazy follow from a tiger.

There is a guy who fishes in Utah reservoirs who shows up on this board from time to time. Seems to know a lot about tigers. Showed his lures once. The ones I remember were the Bucher Baby Depth Raider and the Cisco Kid Wrangler. You should ask this guy to give you some advice. I think his name is Soronsen or something like that. He also claims he once caught a 50" tiger in a Utah reservoir. Don't buy it. It was really an inflatable.

that would probably be good advice if original poster was trolling a deep reservoir instead of casting a weedy minnesota lake.

TundraWalker, what lakes are you claiming you see Tigers in around michigan? I would be interested to hear this because no lakes have been actively stocked with Tigers in michigan anywhere in years... Unless your referring to St. Clair

All Inland Michigan lakes have been stocked with northern strain or iowa strain muskies for years now..

They occur naturally in any lake that has pures and pike.

no kidding.. But michigan has very few lakes with natural reproduction of fish other than way up north or St. Clair.

Most of the inland lakes are stocked, and the fish cannot naturally reproduce, hence why i asked the question. Just curious is all
