I've read nothing but bad things about these engines. But, a friend of mine has a 175 on his Ranger bass boat. I think it is a 2000. He's had no problems with it at all. If you are going to pursue the boat/motor further, be sure to get the engine checked out by a reputable mechanic.

No matter how good the price, I wouldn't touch that motor. Their history speaks for itself.

I have a buddy that rebuilds two-strokes and he said he wouldn't take them for free.

Have a thick wallet or a low interest credit card to pay for the gas it's going to drink. I HAD a 99 225 Johnson H.O. I loved going fast, but it was expensive. My buddy had a 99 225 FICHT that was practically brand new and he blew it up in the first year. I bought mine with a Triton TR-21. My friends and family told me not to buy it. Being young, I bought it anyway. I wish I would've taken their advise at the time. Also, forget about running anything other than Ethanol-Free Premium. 56 gallon tank at 4 bucks a gallon wasn't great twice a month. This might not be what you want to hear, but I wish I would've listened when I bought mine.
