Subject: Rod/Reel combo for around $200

I'm looking for suggestions for my brother. He has fished for years but not much for musky. I own a cortland 7' rod which seems to be a decent rod. I was thinking either a cortland 7'6" up to 4 oz rod for $100 or a shimano compre 7' or 7'6" rod.

As for reels there are the C3's and C4's which I've owned and they're ok. Would a shiman cardiff be a decent choice.

I'll take any suggestions other than what was mentioned. Thanks!!

Definitely buy a Tackle Industries rod. I have one and it is one of my favorites. Longer rods are easier once you get used to them. I have a 8'6"/9' one piece rod. You will love it for figure 8's. I have the XH and it is a really nice rod.

As far as reels, I have good luck with C3's, but I clean and lube them after about 40 hours of use. I do not pull 10's with a 6500 C3 either though. Abu revo toro 50's were 159 on Cabelas last week. This is a little higher than your original price range, but well worth it.

A TI rod and a Cardiff 400 reel makes a very good combo; works very well for everything except double 10s, 12s, and giant rubber...which a beginner isn't apt to throw anyways.

Like everyone has said, you can't beat a Tackle Industries rod. I have a one piece 9' MH with split grips and love it.

I'd second the longer rods. Even an 8' rod is much nicer than a 7' or 7'6".

I'd check out the for trade forum. There are some good deals at times and you can get more rod and reel for your money buying slightly used. For instance, I just bought a slightly used ABU 6500 SSC for $50 which retails for about $95. You might even get two decent rod and reels for $200 that way.

Just a suggestion: One thing you can do is post a WTB (wanted to buy) for rods and reels at $50 each. Lots of people have unused equipment laying around that they might want to sale.

Both the Cortland and the Shimano Compre are fine medium range rods for bucktails and jerkbaits, and both brands have served me well for two seasons now.

The low range Shimanos are IMO not a better, just a little more expensive choice than the Ambassaduers, with a more modern look.

But if you and your brother wants to discover big plastics and blades, look for longer and heavier rods(TI or Reactionstrike for 100$), and a pair of power handles for more comfort.

I tried out a new TI 9ft XH split grip a couple weeks ago and was blown away by how nice a rod it is for throwin blades even into a strong wind. Very impressive rod for reasonable money!

One thing to check is how long of a rod that can be transported securely. While 9 ft rods are nice, one has to have a way to transport them. For instance, some people can only transport rods in their boat in a locked rod locker. That is OK if the rod locker can handle rods that long, but a problem if the rod locker is shorter. Some people have a vehicle where they can carry long rods. Some don't.

One thing is for sure, go on a trip with your rods laying in the boat, make a stop or two, and you may not have them when you get to the lake.

One option is telescoping rods. They can give the you the length and also can be collapsed for easier transport. I have an 8'6" Okuma XH and it collapsed down to about 7'3". Its a very good rod for medium to larger baits, but might be a little heavy for what you want. I would think either the XH or a heavy action 8'6" rod might be a good option. Here is a link:

100% on the telescopic rods for storage. I of course sell my 9' Tackle Industries (TI rods) in telescopic with full or split rip 18" fat handles. Mine store at 7'6" and that will fit almost any boat rod locker. I also like my 9'3" XH Okuma telescopic rod I got 2 years ago. Been a good rod for me.
