| and now everyone will finally know what a REAL girth that big looks like. holy crap. 48.5"Long, 28.5 girth, 49lbs Tiger Muskie GIANT!!!!!!!This weekend my Uncle Charlie Gallagher & his buddies from Chicago, IL, came up to the north country on a guided muskie trip with his favorite nephew (ME), on a quest to get his first Muskie. Little did Charlie know he would catch one of the largest Tiger muskies ever caught in the world.
It was 48.5" long, with a 28.5" girth and weighed 49lbs, Charlie Gallagher released her. The world record Tiger muskie was caught in 1919 in WI it was 51" , 51lbs.
The MN state record is 36lbs, so this blows the Mn record out of water.

Hi Guys
I got a few emails to write a little about this, It was a great to be in the boat and have my Uncle Charlie Gallagher From Chicago Catch such a amazing fish, I think it eithers has a healthey diet of eating 10 lb Ducks or Geese????lol
I would love to see what this fish could be in the Fall time???? I jsut told the guys to make one more cast back onto the spot, from a differ angle and she ate a top raider.
I never saw the fish till i netted it, and it rolled in the net and i freaked out how fat she was, I have caught thousands of muskies and have had many big ones in the boat in the fall with fat bellies, but this was truely amazing.
The Great thing is she is still swimming, and hope to get bigger LOL
Great Fish Charlie, True Giant

On State and World record fish I am trying to get a grasp on how it counts on a catch and release. If that fish shattered the current MN record and was caught in MN then it should be in print as the "New" record right? But since it wasn't verified by whomever wherever is it just personal satisfaction of knowing you have the record?
I'm thinking I would have thumped her, the boys would be over at the house looking at my mounts on the wall and I'd be telling them the one on the left is the new State record and the one on the right is the Guide who tried to stop me
Great catch! |

Great job guys!

| Very cool that the NAVY is painting their submarines to look like Tiger Muskies! That's insane!
Is he going to get a reproduction made? And where would someone go for a custom manikin like that?
Congrats! |

A mold does not exist for that fish. Unless a Mold maker / replica artist wants to fabricate, or extensively alter an existing mold. Well..... good thing he has great pictures!!! Very costly, time comsuming, and unprofitable. Since few if ANY have caught a tiger of that proportions. There is no real demand for replicas of those proportions.
I would be impressed if anyone would take on the challange. But throw money at anything. |
|
|
|
| Can you imagine that fish this fall? is that true for tigers the same way it is for trues? ie., while their metabolism would slow with the cooler water, they wouldn't start building any egg mass since they're sterile? it seems to me that tigers tend to be more consistently thick all through the year?

| Congrats Dusty!! Likely the 3rd or 4th largest Tiger ever caught...and it wasn't even "legal"!
And by the way, the current WR Hybrid was 52 1/4" long and had a 25 1/4 inch girth and weighed 51 pounds 3 ounces. Both it and the 2nd place fish too were boundary waters fish...albeit the other side of WI.

| Hey Larry, Can you provide any additional information on the 1st and 2nd place tigers? If I recall correctly, they were both low 50 pound class fish caught out of Lac Vieux Desert, and both by women. Anyways, I'll take a "3rd" place fish any day - what a pig. |

Location: Hopefully on the water | Great catch. There is something about a Tiger that makes them something different. For me a 45" tiger would get a replica. Now add 3 1/2" and many pounds. It may be tough to make this replica but I would guess that someone would want to make it. That fish is a fish of Millions of casts. One that I would guess will stick in the memory for a very long time. |

| thats because, thats what a real 28.5 inch girth looks like...most guys will never see that kind of girth...even if its posted. |

| Guest:
The top Tiger was caught by John Knobla from Lac Vieux desert in 1919 and was the WR "muskie" for 10 years (hybrids unknown at that time). I'd bet that the total length given was "fork length", a measurement that Field & Stream used for several years.
The second place Tiger was 56 inches long x 26 1/2 inch girth and too was caught from Lac Vieux desert in 1950 by Delores Ott Lapp.
Off to try and catch my own giant...see ya in awhile.

| Great Fish I have a 46 inch 30# tiger on the wall of my office and when I looked at my fish(which draws people on the size) I say WOW................... great job releasing that fish, Big Musky Don |
|
|
|
| Based upon the measurements this should be the heaviest hybrid ever taken. The current WR hybrid isn't even close based upon the reported measurements.
With a girth of only 25.25" the current WR hybrid could not possibly weigh 51 lbs. 3 oz. unless it was filled with something much denser than flesh or water. This is true regardless of how the length measurement was taken. |
|
|
|
| Status based upon 800 weight formula (Girth x Girth x Length / 800 = Weight)
1# 28.5" x 48.5"... 49.24 lbs.
2# 26.5" x 56"... 49.16 lbs.
3# 25.25" x 52.25"... 41.64 lbs. (Current WR)

Proof current WR are bunk. With the current WR weight for Tigers 51# Must have ate a 10 pound loon or two.

| It was said in one of the above posts that the current WR hybrid was likely measured only to the fork of the tail meaning the total length was actually about 55" instead of 52.25". Even if this were true the fish would still fall far short of the claimed weight of 51 lbs. 3 oz. In this case the 25.25" x 55" fish would have an 800 formula weight of 43.83 lbs. compared to the 28.5" x 48.5" at 49.24 lbs.
The current WR hybrid is obviously a hoax based upon it's own measurements. If it had eaten a loon or two it's girth would surely be over 25.25". |
|
|
|
| Actually, as a taxidermist I've done several Tiger muskies and they are simple modifications to existing pure musky blanks/replicas. In fact, the differences are SO minute I don't even charge extra to modify one. Just an FYI...
