Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Things are looking great for a hot action month. Water temps are on the rise. Weed growth is catching up with sunshine and a high water start to slightly below normal levels for this time of year.
June ended with some action mainly centred around spinner baits and weeds. Won't be long before the fish will be roaming the rocks and chasing any bucktail you throw at them.
Was a little period of action with topwater baits the last 10 days or so as well. Hope that carries over to July.
Water clarity has been good and water temps in in the 70s.
Good luck up on "the Woods" in July. |

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Got out for a few hours Sunday evening. Sunny and hot with a load of mayflies hatched the night before. Some bays were infiushable as te wind hadn';t moved anything around.
Found a decent fish active and agressive on the first spot in sand/weeds so was optimistic for a good evening. The fish clobbered a small crank bait twitched and jerked back in.
Fished more weeds in a couple of good saddles and a some weeds in front of some rock, but found nothing. Saw one other smaller fish on the same bait off of a spine of a large complex of structure mostly all boulders/bare rock, but it was low and late.
Had some first timers out with me that were throwing mostly topwater and spinner baits. They did well casting the big equipement and certainly put their baits in the strike zones, but couldnt get anything else going.
The fish will go nuts soon and I hope I'm not chained to the dock when it starts. HA. |

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Fish have been going the last coupel days. This might be the start of godo things.
Several fish 46-48 caught the last couple of days. Larger fish soon and hooked, bot not landed.
Sctructure and presenation has varied greatly, but the most common has been wieeds/spinner baits.
It's a good time to be coming or getting ready to come to LOTW,
Water temps 75ish most areas on the surface now. Weed growth that is present looks great. |

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | We'll try to keep the bite white hot for you til then!
Fish are still active. Good news and bad news and it's both the same...fish have been using all sctructures. Again seeing fish on weeds/sand, weedy saddles/rock, shoreline rock, etc. Anytime there is a piece of structure with multiple elemets, it seems a fish is in there somewhere.
Water temps were in the 74-76 range last night most places I fished.
Saw 10 fish, caught 3 with a couple nice ones.
Spinner baits got the most action (northland booty calls, ace tandems.) Topwater, bucktails, twitchers also raised fish.
A guest boat got 4 on Friday from 40-48, with 3 on of them on bucktails, which is a good sign for the blade bite getting warmed up as well.
Stable weather in the forecast. Fishing should be great until a massive front comes through. |

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Fish have been very actice. Daytime biters are a bit slower, but fish are showing themselves for going back at them during prime times. all structures have been producing...rocks, rock/weed, weeds/sand, weed bars, etc. Spinner baits, gliders, WTD and some bucktails all been working. black/orange may be the hottest colour.
water temps pushing 80 so please keep that in mind when handling your fish. The bigger equipment, heavier tackle etc can get your fish landed in a good size net for them to recover before totally playing them out.....one quick snap and back in the water will help keep stress down this time of year.
great time to be on the Woods if you can stand the heat!

| Justin-
Keep the reports coming- I will be in to buy my license from you guys this Friday am, I will be up staying at the Greg Johnson's island with 3 other buddies hoping to put some fish in the bag. We will be chasing skis until Monday. I am not sure I will recognize you with that grizzly adams beard you are sporting. That is some fish and beard you got with sondag. Just hoping for stable weather with all this heat, and hope the bloom has not gotten too bad.
See you Friday

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Sounds good, Jay. See you Friday morning. Still lots of fish showing themselves, but not enough opening up for a snack. Patterns are switching from rocks to weeds to rocks depending on the day. Cloudy here with a little breeze after days of intense heart/sunshine. Still warm so nothing to upset the stability of the weather pattern, but a bit of a change in conditions. Talked a few boats last night that did pick up a couple each on their evening tour.
Yes, I'm trying a little something new this year. Going for the rustic look I guess. If I had known Jerry was gonna bag a biggie, I might have got the trimmer out before going fishing with them. HAHA
Bloom has been coming in, but water is still crystal clear to the east. I'll be checking things out that way when I can get out this weekend. When fish start showing up on rocks, Sabaskong is never a bad place to be. |

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | Have I ever mentioned I love this area! Had a blast up there again this year! Did a little 3 day stint up there after opener with my buddy Dave Fornara from Heavy Metal Guide service (Stone Lake, Wi) and then a week with my buddy Jake (and a day with Justin) after the holiday vacationers were there. Had a great time as combined we stuck 31 muskies most of them in the 40 inch range with 5 at the 50 class. My wife has me locked in MN for the rest of the season as our son is due in September. We got some stellar footage for Go Fish II. It's gonna be awesome! Can't wait to put it out!
Can't wait to get back to the woods!

Pretty good action week for your first trip to the area! Lots of things going on with the heat then the storms and cool down with wind to end the week.
I'll get pics from your trip on the website and our discussion forum in the next couple of days.
Great meeting you all and we'll look forward to having you back in 2012.

| We just got back-Good as always seeing you Justin. We fished hard in the wind and cooler temps and managed to still bag a few. Our group of four ended up with 7 fish in the net. All fish ended up between 41-46. Those LOW fish sure have shoulders though. Tough conditions I felt like we did well. Our key was downsizing. Black and silver put all the fish in the boat on rock. Of course had some heartbreak with a monster fish coming unpinned at the boat and the most interesting thing we saw was a wolf. We were fishing a sandy bay and a wolf came out of the woods and walked the whole length of the bay, basically within casting distance of where we were fishing. It almost seemed curious what we were doing. Until next time-hopefully Labor day.

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | July ended with a pretty good flurry of activity. Muskies were showing themselves again, but not eating as much as we'd like. Many were falling off as well. They seem to be doing that more this year also. However, many great fish were caught for the week including personal bests of 47, 49.5, 51, 52 and 52 inches. Can't hardly complain about that!
Rocks and weeds still produced, with rock being more regular near the end of the week. Spinner baits were hot, as well as jerk baits. Bucktails would come next in line. Some topwater action as well, but would be down the list further.
Black/orange and black/nickel top two colour patterns.
Weather stabilizing again but hot. Some wind here and there but mostly fishable. Water getting green in places, but overall good for this time of year. Water temps 75ish most places.
Bring on August reports!! |
