Location: Duluth, MN | I'm currently trying to get my rod/reel lineup to a point where I feel like I have the right rod/reel set up for every bait in my box. My question is, how many combinations do you think it would take to be set up for everything you're throwing? Can it be done in 4? What action/length rods would you suggest? What gear ratios and how much line pickup on the reels? I'm not looking for specific brands, but rather some guidelines of things you would want.
Thanks,
Adam |

One for everything but the really light stuff. One for the small light stuff used in the spring, as well as 10" tubes and smaller.
If you don't throw small stuff then one. |

Location: Contrarian Island | it can be done with 2 but imo having more is better... I tend to have 4-6 in my boat at any time....having a slow gear ratio reel for avg speed bucktails & slow rolling at night is one combo, (9' Sling blade, winch 4.6 to 1) a combo for side to side stuff (mine is 8' all star, with revo 60 5.4), a longer rod with a stiffer tip and a burner (Trini 16NA, Diamondback custom 8'9") and a good crank/inline topwater, spinnerbait/avg size bucktail rod (9' DB/Calcutta TE) and then a rod for the big heavy stuff like pounders/mag dawgs and a reel to pick up the slack line between rips...(St Croix Legend/toro 60 6.4 to 1)
it can be done with 2 ...but imo having more is better and will help you work and cast baits better/farther, less fatigue, and put more fish in the boat. |

Location: Eagan, MN | I carry 4 (not including trolling rods) and that more than covers everything for me. My combos have a lot of overlap but basically boil down like this:
- light stuff (small twitchbaits, grinders, topraiders)
- suick rod (seldom has anything else on it, sometimes a standard sized crankbait)
- double 10 rod
- big stuff (big crankbaits mostly, has pretty much had a 10" krave on it all year)
I could do without one of the middle two as they are pretty much the same action and power, but I wouldn't want to cut it down to 2 even though it could be done.
If it helps these are the actual combos:
8-6 predator mh / 7000
8-0 diamondback h / 7000
8-6 steel 20 / 700te
8-6 steel 25 / 7000 |

Location: Minnesota | Three setups for me:
9'0 Tackle Industries XXH telescoping mated with Okuma Cedros- This gets regulated to overall duty... I find I use this rod more with Rubbers, Swimbaits, Bucktails/DB8-10 (slowrolling-moderate), topwaters, etc etc... One Setup to do almost everything...
9'0 Thorne Bros Predator XH mated with Shimano Trinidad 16NA- This gets regulated to High Speed duty, burning bucktails... Liking it so far... Still need more practice with Trinidad... Might will purchase a 9'0 Tackle Industries XH in the winter or so and see how comparable it is to the Predator...
7'6 Modified Grandt XH mated with Okuma Isis- This is my Gliders/Jerkbaits/WTD Topwater setup...

| I carry 4 setups: a 7' blackriver jerkbait rod with a revo 60hs, an 8' blackriver top n tail with a record 50, a blackriver 7'6" cranker with a record 60, and an 8'6" blackriver hawgchaser with a 7000 pro rocket. With these I can throw everything from the smaller rattlebaits up to pounders. I've even thrown the mamoth sue, but I was careful not to over power the cast. I hope this helps. |

| I like to have at least Three!
Right now i have an 8'6" XXH with a calcutta B for everything from bulldawgs to twitch baits and glide baits to topwaters. A 9'3" XH with a toro winch 60 for all my bucktails (it can be pretty hard to thorw a small bucktail with this set up though). And a 7' with a Calcutta B mainly for suicks and jackpots, thats about all i thorw on this set up! But it wouldn't hurt to have a couple more! |
