I applied the first coat of E-tex to my lures....it came out fairly well, but there were a few places on the lures that the epoxy seems to resist and not want to stick onto. I let them dry to apply the second coat. Now the second coat is making MAJOR pock marks all over the finish.....almost making it look like frog skin! Anyone know what I'm doing wrong, if I'm skipping an important step or what is causing this. Everything is measured to the exact with large measuring seringes and cups. What could be causing this?? They are not bubbles either because the torch does nothing to it......will this possibly eventually smooth out? I just did them.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like there is a little oil from your hands in those spots. Or maybe from the material you are using if it is wood. Cedar does that to me at times. The resin in the wood creates a spot the etex doesn't like. Just an idea.

I would get rid of the torch. I use my breath, like when you clean sunglasses, that takes away any bubble that form. Just an idea.

I had this issue on a few early Grunts. What I found was that I could wipe down the lures with alcohol previous to the first application and that fixed it.

I found out it was a bad reaction to the rubber in the seringes I was using....appearently they contain silicone which does not sit well with th E-tex....thanks for the help.

Yep...rubber on the syringes...just had the same problem last week. I bought some special flexcoat syringes($4) off ebay and impatiently wait for them to arrive!

Yep you can blow across etex and then watch the bubbles start to pop. Learned that trick years ago. Still use it when a get some that takes on a lot of air when mixing.

forget the syringes and just get a gram scale. Weigh your 2 part epoxies out to the exact ratio in grams. For instance, my baits take 6 grams to coat, 3 grams each of resin and catalyst times how many baits you are going to coat. Measure with the scale right of the contain you mix in. No mess, no buying syringes, no waste. I bought a gram scale at walmart for $20 a few years ago and wished I figured it out sooner.

Yep gram scales are great I paid under $30 for mine at BPS. I do the same weigh into two clear cups then mix. Works great and the cups I use can flex so after the epoxy cures I can pop it out and reuse the cups. I get the cups free from a neighbor that drinks peach tea mix from Walmart. he saves them and I rinse them out and have free cups.

One thing you want to do when measuring them out on a digital scale is to weigh both the hardener and resin by them selves in full bottles. Then you have to develop a ratio based on weight. It is not a 1:1 by weight like it is volume. I use paper cups to mix in and the scale is the only way to go. For me, my mixing ratio is 6 grams hardener to 7.5grams resin for the clear I am using (different than yours) to give me a 1:1 by volume. I personally only use one cup for the mixing process. Add the resin first, then the hardener, mix and brush on. My air bubbles are popped by torch but that takes some touch as it is very easy to over-heat.
