Wondering what you guys use for backing on your reels. Do you go with the heavier test/larger diameter like 20# or something lighter. How many yards do you spool. Mono or Fluoro?

Thanks

I don't use it.. i spool completely with braid and use electrical tape around the bare spool so it doesn't slip. I think most people use 12lb thou.

Whatever you want. Smaller diameter packs in neater, if that matters. I've used anywhere from 6-20. Seems like 14 matches up good with 80 in diameter for knot tying.

Whatever I have laying around works for me but if possible I go with 20 or 30lb just because it doesn't take as much reeling to fill up with backing.

I pick up bulk really cheap mono in 8-14 LB (1000 yards for under $10)..I really dont understand why you wouldn't use backing and fill the spool -1/4 to 1/2 full , depending on the size reel you are using - heck when I used a Saltist 40 I spooled it more than 1/2 full of mono. I only want to put about of 125 yard of braid on my reels, why put 300 yards of braid on a muskie reel?.
