I think it's GREAT that a 12 yr. old caught and KEPT the state record fish in Maryland. How's that.
Good for him! I know if I was his father I would be a proud pappa right now. This kid should be hooked for life.
There shouldnt be any negatives about this at all. Records are meant to be broken, if not, why bother even keeping track?
I sure hope this post doesnt get innudated with negatives about killing the fish. Its a personal choice and one that VERY VERY few of us will ever have to make because catching a record caliber fish is so rare.

Great to see kids out fishing but even better when they set records.
As far as killing the fish to get it weighed hard to say what a person will do to get in the record book. Even I myself am nt so sure what I would do if I thought a fish I caught would set a record. It sure would be nice to be in a record book for all to see!!!
I will cross that path if it should ever happen which how my luck will never have to worry about making that choice!!!!
