Has anyone tried to modify these to help the hooking percentage? I have heard it mentioned before but not sure how you would modify it.

Move the front screw eye back. If I remember correctly it's a 1/4" or 1/2" you could also run 5/0s on the bait. Should help with hook ups. Don't forget to epoxy the front eye when you move it back.

sorry I dont want to be rude, I have heard of and tried different things with jackpots to improve hookups and to be honest with everything you end up doing you are better off buying a different topwater that offers everything you changed and it will be better quailty!

I've added two coats of envirotex and upsized the hooks on one of my jackpots and liked the effects. However, I would rather throw a weagle, one eyed willy, or one of my homemade topwaters anyday.

Put a 3rd hook on it....... Funny how the better hooking WTDs all have 3 hooks... Fish stick, one eyed willy, Weagle. etc...
Get a stainless screw eye from the hardware store.
You'll have to move the front hook hanger toward the nose enough to get out of the way of the 3rd hook, but not too far where it tangles on the head of the bait..
Look at 1 of the 3 baits I mentioned for idea of where to put the hooks if your concerned.. Also, I'd drop 1 size if adding a 3rd to avoid tangles, and put a drop of epoxy in the old hook hanger hole to avoid it soaking in water right away..

Just make sure to check the lure everytime you use it or after every fish. When I used to throw them I had a couple that had the eye pull out...never lost a fish because of that, but I don't trust them any more.

Ditto what "Whynot" said.
I had an 18" pike pull an eylet out thrashing in my net.

Won't adding a 3rd hook and moving the front one more forward ruin the WTD motion? I was under the impression that a heavier tail than head is what caused the WTD motion.

Why not just move one of the hooks more toward the middle and call it good? From a lot of what I've seen Larry Dahlberg preach, the front hook is often useless and rarely gets hit.

No it wont ruin the action by adding a 3rd hook... Over thinking I think...

Front hook is useless? Cmon......... When they're even semi active they t-bone baits, getting the front hook more often than not...

I think Mr. Dahlberg says the Back hook is rarely needed.

One thing with the jackpot: if it is really popping out of the water alot, you might tame the retrieve a tad to keep it in the surface poised for a hit, without really slowing it down.

Don't buy into the common suggestion to switch to a weagle and you'll be trouble free. Those two lures are as similar as a rizzo whiz and a cowgirl. Both great lures that I won't leave home without, but a mistake to think one or the other can possibly do it all in a variety of conditions.

wtd topwaters that ride high always get tons of action that makes you cannot resist throw them but it comes with a price, low hookups, it's just kind of the way it is no matter what you do you cant have your ckae and eat it too that would be too good!
