I’m sure this topic has been covered numerous times, but I’m going to ask it again. I’m looking to upgrade my cranking/starting battery on my boat, and I did the whole get a cheap battery every now and then, but I’m getting tired of that system.

I’m looking for a cranking/starting battery that has at least 800-1000 marine cranking amps!

I’ve been looking at getting a Trojan, does anyone have any other feedback on them, or others?

Thanks guys.

I just installed one of these because my stereo pulls serious power.

I have been using Interstate batteries for over 15 years. They have not let me down yet.
I just bought a new cranking battery:

Interstate Marine Cranking
Size: 24M-XHD
800 CCA
1000 MCA
24 month warranty
Cost: $85 w/core. +$10 w/o

I'll third the interstate batteries.

Scoff if you want, but I've got a 29 series Everstart starting/cranking battery in the boat now and that thing is pretty beastly. 875 cranking amps. Not a bad price, decent warranty and they seem to last.

I've had batteries that have been around a decade, and some that were literally junk when I purchased them and put them in the boat, and everything in between. But the one thing they all had in common........they ALL
died eventually. At least so far, price hasn't seemed to be a determining factor.

Walmart uses Johnson Controls made batteries that I hear are built to military specifications. The last set I bought for the boat were around 150.00.

I like the DEKA Marine Master batteries. My dad got my first set from a battery distributor about 12 years ago. They were the first set of batteries that gave me 4 seasons of tough trolling motor use, so I continue with them. Sometimes difficult to find, though certain retailers now carry them.

Put another notch down for Interstate Batteries... And if you have a distributor store in the area take a look and see if you can get the referbs... half the cost and a warranty.

I've got the Interstate 27M-XHD 800 CCA 1000 MCA, and it crapped out on me, but I've been working with Interstate and I'm bring it in this week to have to it checked, and they do have a great warranty system in place, so I'm hoping to walk away with a new one. I use Optima's for my trolling motor ,and love them, and they have lasted, but I'm on a budget this season. So I'm hoping Interstate can replace this battery. Thanks again for everyones feed back !

Another vote for interstate batteries, i've run trojan's and walmart brands in the past and seemed to replace batteries frequently. Since going to interstate batteries i've been good for 2 years and the trolling motor charge seems to last a lot longer.

I've got the Trojan SCS225 installed downstairs for my battery backup sump pump and all I have to say is this battery has never let me down. I lose power every time it storms and this battery lasts for a good 24 hrs while my basement watchdog pump runs a good 24 hrs on and off. I think it's about 5 years old now still running strong!

There is Trojan and then there,s everybody else.Spend the extra money and get one.Batteries Plus carriers them at a good price.used them all over the years and none better.Just purchased a new Lund Predator and had three Trojans installed.I won,t use anything else.Get the biggest battery you can fit in your boat.You.ll be amazed at the longevity and the balls their batteries have.Good Luck.manny

As I understand it, Trojan no longer makes a cranking battery. Is that accurate? What model do you use for your cranking battery?

If they don,t make a AGM anymore a Sc 225 will be fine. Sorry but i don,t have time to go to their website and check.Go to Trojan website and they list them all.Guys remember that Trojan invented the golf cart battery ages ago.Nobody else plays in that market and i,m pretty sure everbody you can name has,nt been around as long as Trojan in the deep cycle world. Metal prices have skyrocketed batteries prices in the last 4 years.I,m no Trojan salesmen but my left nut says their the best i,ve seen in the last 24 years.Talk to the non compensated pros they,ll tell you who is king. Remember proper maintenence is very important.Gl Manny

If i were you i would go with Interstate or Walmart brands. I would not go with Trojan, or any other high end battery. I have 4 trojan batteries in my boat right now...the trolling motor batteries are series 27 and I think the starting battery is a 24. This is the start of the 4th season with these batteries and there toast, they say a full charge but drop to 50% after a few hours. They have been religously checked and maintained and topped off when need be and put on the onboard charger right after every use. I think I paid around 150 each...thats 600 bones in batteries, how many walmart or interstates can you buy with 600 and how many years will that carry you? I'd say way more than 3 full seasons. I will say that for the money its a huge mistake and the added cost doesn't buy you any longer battery life.

I am on my 4th year with the Trojans for the trolling motor (SCS225 – largest size), and this past weekend I had my trolling motor puke on me after two hours. I was like WTH! First time on the water for the year. At the cabin I found one of the two batteries was toast. Run to Eagle River, and I got two new Interstates size 29 to replace them. Didn’t realize Interstates got so pricey!

After the first year with the Trojans I got a cranking battery as well as my Interstate that was in the boat was showing signs of needing replacing (7 years old). Since getting that cranking battery I have always had issues of getting low voltage warnings while night fishing. And I am only talking ½ hour into the night. I never had that issue with the Interstate cranking battery until the year I replaced it.

By the way that was the second Trojan cranking battery I got as the first was junk from the store.

For what it’s worth I think I am done with Trojan, and will be going back to Interstate.

Did you maintain them over the off season? If not, no battery will ever last!

Spending more $ for name brand batteries is a waste of money IMHO. For instance, walmart brand are the same battery as interstate, both made by Johnson controls, just with a different label. Save yourself some cash and get your batteries at Sam's or Costco (best prices I have found).

I have 3 Wally World batteries in my boat all the same age and the starting battery needs replacing. It should have lasted more than the 7 years I got after all I paid $85.00

With the deep cycle batteries we used on electric lift trucks we were told to use the battery till it was down to about 10% before recharging as the battery only had so many cycles. I have always done this with my boat batteries and it has served me well even though some sayto recharge after each use. ( can necessitate having spare batteries available)

I've had Trojan AGM's in my Ranger since 2007....I'm on water about 600 hrs per year...so far all 3 have been rock solid...I run 4 LCX Lowrances and a 4 speaker stereo and haven't had any issues starting the big motor or draining it down and I've never gone thru the 31s in any day on the water.... I don't think they make the same batteries I have anymore..if/when they go, I will replace them with Optimas most likely as I like the no maintenance feature of the agm styles...

My walmart batteries (Johnson controls) lasted longer than my trojan batteries. yah, i know i was just as surprised but they did. I don't think walmart makes a 800/1000 thou.

Another vote for Interstate. Mine or on four years, hoping for five. They aren't just good Batteries either, they are a good company that cares for their employees. If you decide to get AGM's, Interstate also makes the Optima Battery line last I knew.
