Was thinking about making my own steel leaders and wanted to know what twist is the best and why?

Barrel twists are better. I just say that, because they look much better. Oh, and some guy named Jason might come on here. He may or may not say that haywire is better. He may even say that he likes doing both. Don't believe anything he says. He just doesn't know how to make a pretty barrel leader. LOL.

A haywire twist supposedly absorbs shock... not sure it that's true though. I like barrel twist better, like previous poster says it looks better.

I as well like and use the barrel warp. Adds a professional appearance. Should be noted I use #174 wire.

Wow....I don't even know what wrap/twist I do; I probably go both ways lol . I just wrap the wire around a round nose pliers, insert the hardware (solid ring and O'ring), make 3-4 loose wraps (tag end loosely around the main wire), then finish it off with a couple tight wraps. It looks just fine and gets the job done! Around 100 fish on leaders wrapped like this with absolutely no problems.

^^^^ That's HIM!!! HAHAHA!! J- the loose wrap that you start yours off with is the haywire, and the tight wraps is the barrel.
I know you've never had a failure, and you consistantly catch big fish. Just messin' with ya!

My experience has been that the lighter the wire, the more important the Haywire Twist becomes.

175# and above a barrel wrap is fine... but when using 105# piano wire (my preferred single strand wire) a haywire wrap is essential.  Trust me.

Ditto to jlong on the wire and the importance of the haywire on lighter wire. I prefer 120# single strand and use only two twists then a barrell wrap. The lighter the wire the more twists I'll put into the haywire.

Most people don't do a haywire correctly and might as well only use a barrell wrap. A correctly done haywire can be seen here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNx8BbFOqKI

I agree with both. If you don't do it on the lighter wire you run the risk of the barrel twist sliding down snug onto split ring or lure. You lose your loop. While important on the light wire (I use to use the 109# and 129# quite a bit) I still use both twist on my 174#.

Watching Will's video I am not sure I do the haywire right as it looks like it is made so that each wrap touches. Mine do not. However, I have never had an issue with mine.

hmmm if jlong, Will, and Ciscokid all agree with each other, I think it is a pretty good idea to listen to them as well :). I just do loose wraps at first because I have seen leaders made with a Kwik Twist Tool (just barrel wraps) break as the wire is really brittle from being wrapped too tightly at first.

That is the tool I used. It got too tough on the fingers with just a pliers and fingers!
