Subject: 50 HP Evinrude lower unit issue

I have a 1980 Evinrude 50 HP tiller and encountered a major issue on my first trip out for the year. Boat ran great and shifted in and out of gear fine......after a few WOT runs it "kicked" out of gear and would not engage back into forward or reverse. After getting the boat out of the water I checked and I am missing a screw & rubber grommet out of the hub assy which is behind the prop and there was little or no lower unit gear lube left (Leaked out of the missing screw hole). If the motor is turned off and i shift into forward or reverse the prop does lock in gear like it should, but when the motor is running and I shift into gear the prop does not rotate in forward or reverse. If in neutral the prop will rotate as it should. Any suggestions on what it may be????

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

Took some time and dropped the lower unit to inspect it.....worst fears realized. Broken drive shaft, bad water pump/impeller & burnt up bearings. A screw from the inner hub assy came out and the gear lube leaked out causing it to overheat and seize which in turn broke the shaft. Looks like I am in the market for a new lower unit. In talking to a few "experts" I found it is cheaper to find a good used unit then to rebuild the old one......so if anybody has a "decent" 1977-1989 40-55 hp 2cyl lower unit they want to part with let me know.

Thanks,
