Good day. I wanted to upgrade to a new Ranger this year but wife said nope, next year and so she got a new SUV instead. But, she did let me upgrade to new electronics to be put in the new boat next year. I bought Lowrance HDS 8, HDS 5 and LSS-1 and installed in my current Ranger. The good thing is that I used the HDS 5 for ice fishing and it is phenomonal for that and so hopefully I can get an HDS 10 next year with the boat and keep the HDS 5 just for ice fishing.

I am curious if the down / side imaging has helped you discover holding areas and such? Any information on how these tools help you be more successful is greatly appreciated in leveraging these electronics.

Thanks

Don

I just bought a 898SI so I'll tell you if it does. That or I'll be very quiet about it...

I like my LSS. I use it mostly to use WITH conventinoal sonar as it shows me actually what kind of weeds I'm over. Whereas on sonar it often just looks like "something" and now I can see if it's cabbage, grass, reeds, etc.

If baitfish are suspended high over open water it can show you balls of baitfish that you sometimes wouldn't find by driving directly over them you can cursor over to the ball and mark it. Might help give you more confidence to fish open water. Before fishing you can drive around and see the edge of the weedbeds and find points and turns.

I like the idea of comparing what the structure scan is showing you to what your 2D sonar is reading because it is actually a learning experience. At that point you really begin to learn your sonar. Aside from reading bait fish on side view it can really be helpful if you are a troller aside from just following your mapping. I know I hate it when I am trolling a weed line and find a mistake on my mapping.

Occasionally you can find actual fish with it, and it helps find subtle structure. What I used it for most though was keeping the right distance from a weedline. Sometimes it would even pick up some deeper weeds that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

It's great for seeing secondary spots like scattered boulders off a deep point, or sporadic patches of weeds that you might otherwise miss. More of a scouting tool than a fish finding tool.
