I am going to be on Rainy in August. Was wondering if anyone knows a guide or local who could guide me on a day of musky fishing. Heard that there are some musklies in Rainy but probably on far north Canadian side. Feel free to reply to: [email protected]

I've fished Rainy on the Ontario side the last three years on Labor Day weekend. Great pike action, not so much luck with the muskies. We've moved several but only put one low-30's in the boat. If you want more details send me a PM.

Jeff, I have stayed at Island View a few times as well as on a small island on the Canadian side but we targeted smallies & pike in May/June. Based on viewing different forums over the years regarding muskie fishing in Rainy, there is a fishable population in the areas of Red Gut and Seine bays. I'm not sure about a guide but I do know if you contacted Rainy Lake One Stop (218-286-5700) in International Falls they could probably steer you in the right direction. Also, if you made a post in the following forum, I'm sure someone could also help you out. It's a great place to visit with some phenominal pike, smallie, & walleye fishing. Hopefully you can boat a muskie when you're up in August. Good luck. Here's the website/forum:

Here's an early-mid nineties Elephant Rock fish that ate a Topper Stopper. The fish was caught between two nasty t-storms. We headed back out after the first storm hoping the second would hold off long enough to fish the last hour of light.  The look on my face is not due to excitement of catching the fish but more the realization that we stayed out too long and were about to get nailed by storm number two.

I should also add that the fish was caught in August and was handled well. We didn't cause the nasty scar and if I remember correctly the fish had scars on both sides.

Muskies on Rainy are tough--Seine and redgut are your best chances. Walleye and pike should be consistant.

Where are you staying? MN side, or Canada side? How far can you motor for fish?

I think most of the muskies are on the Canadian side. We stay in Bear's Pass and still run 10-15 miles north to fish muskies.

Get ahold of Matt Shermone(sp). Sorry I don't have a # but several buddies have fished with him and he's a class act all the way. He knows Rainy muskies!
