| I was wondering what the pros and cons of using short shank hooks over regular shank hooks. For example I have noticed that most of the jerkbaits have short shank hooks. I understand they do that sometime so the hooks don't tangle together. I don't know if short shank hooks help with hooking the fish better or is that a con.
thanks for any help,

| Justin,
I hate short shank hooks and take them off every bait that comes with them and toss them in the trash. My hook ups are far better on baits with reg. trebles. More room for the fish to get their mouth around them. The short shanks are too tight to the body of the bait if that makes sense to you. Also 80% of bait manufactures don't put big enough trebles on their baits. I always upsize at least one size if not 2. Muskys can be hard to catch, no reason to make it harder to hook them once they eat.
Good Luck,
Jeff Hanson

Location: Hugo, MN | I actually prefer the short shank hooks on certain baits. Suicks are one that jumps out. The hooks that come on Suicks standard are too narrow to get out beyond the sides of the body. I go to a 3/0 Widebend and my hookups on Suicks has improved significantly. I will agree with Jeff that most baits come with the wrong size hooks on them. Generally I like the short shanks on baits where the hook hangers are too close and hooks are constantly tangled. Also, a short shank or wide gap 3/0 is lighter than a 5/0 which has the same gap. Some baits get too heavy with upsized hooks and won't run right. |

The 3/0 mustad round bend is a short-shank, wide gap hook that is on many of my lures.
Hooks great and keeps them pinned.

| I think a lot of the guys prefer short shank hooks because once they are hooked up with a musky they say they are more apt to stay buttoned up because the musky won't have the leverage to work with on the shorter shank hooks as it's thrashing around. I think you'll get tons of differing opinions here, just find a good quality treble that you are comfortable using and make sure the hooks are sharp and you should be fine. |

Location: Mn | The gap is the most important element of getting a hook around a jawbone. the hooks should be wider than the bait some will t them against the body to help this . Short shanks help to keep from fouling. 3/0 round bend is as big as normal 5/0. Now the choices have expanded in short shank round bends allowing more trebles on shorter baits. |

Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | A longer shank will penetrate better 100 out of 100 times with everything else being equal. I've gotten rid of almost all my short shanked hooks and my hook-ups have gone up. You want the smallest angle from the tip of the hook to where it attaches to your bait. This decreases the amount of energy it takes for the hook to penetrate. It's the same line of reasoning that they incorporated in the EC 374 hooks. |
