I am still working on planning a trip to MN (likely Bemidji area...maybe Vermillion). Had originally planned on going sometime mid July-Mid August.

It's looking like later might work out better for the Wife and I. What are everyone's thoughts about going early/mid September. Thinking maybe around the weekend of the 10th. Would like to miss the heavy vacation weekend of the weekend before.

What are the water temps usually like that time of year there? I would not think we would typically be flirting with turnover that early in the year would we?

Thanks,

Tucker

I don't think turn over should be an issue yet on most lakes. My records from the past few years indicate that the Tuesday after labor day can be productive on the mid-MN lakes I fish. I think all the boat traffic may shut the fish off through Monday and they are nice and hungry on Tuesday.

The weekend after Labor Day will see heavier muskie fishing pressure in the Bemidji, Cass, Walker area due to the Frank Schneider Muskies Inc Tourney. But you could do double duty and fish the tourney, and go home with a new boat!

Hmmm thanks for that bit on info Aaron. It might be fun but I think I would avoid the tournament. Looks like maybe either Vermilion during that time frame or pick a different time to go.

I would like to go on or near a full moon. We probably won't get to fish late at night much and I seem to have better luck during the day with the moon down.

Lots of things to consider for a once a year trip!

What about heading to the west/central MN lakes and hit the Detroit Lakes area, West Battle, or Miltona areas? Not part of the tourney, good September lakes, and a shot at some monsters.

Vermilion sucks, don't go there especially in the fall. No fish in the whole lake...you're better off fishing in a puddle...;)

Actually, Vermilion can be tough that time of year as fish are transitioning. Look at the results from the MAC tournament on Vermilion during that time frame.

Leech is hot in mid sept. and very guys are fishing it anymore as so many are now chasing the hot bite on Vermilion and other waters. if you know where to go on Leech you can have great action and size.

Well if this spring is any gauge on how our fall might be this year.....April 20th, flowers are up, grass is greening, trees are budding and it's snowing outside. Hmmmmm.....

No kidding, weird weather. Who knows how it will turn out, but it seems like the last couple nice, warm springs we had resulted in COLD summers. Maybe we'll have a scorcher this summer or maybe it's going to stay cold.

Never know when planning that ONE trip a year. You can always play the averages but you can never quite know what the conditions will be in several months.

Mid September is good on Leech. Rock bite is started, weeds are still ok. I'd skip that area during the tourney, though. Vermilion is no different than any other lake in Sept., in that the bite can be hit or miss. You can't go wrong with any of the options. In a week, you're bound to see action a couple of days at least.
